Job Description

Job Title: Food Service Manager

Salary Range: $27,971-$44,587

Supervisor: School Nutrition Program Administrator

Classification: Non-Exempt

Contract Length: 10 months 200 days

Job Summary
The Food Service Manager is responsible for performing complex semi-skilled and routine administrative work participating in and supervising food service activities in a cafeteria serving a student and adult population with a-la-carte or satellite program. The Food Service Manager is directly responsible to the School Nutrition Program Administrator.

Essential Duties
Plans, coordinates, assigns, oversees and participates as required in the preparation, cooking and serving of food.

Plans menus and ensures that foods are cooked in quantities according to menus, good dietary principles and number of persons to be served.

Orders food and supplies, receives and accounts for same, and maintains perpetual inventory as well as cost and food consumption records.

Inspects kitchen equipment, storeroom, foods and employees to maintain proper sanitation and operation.

Instructs other employees in the operation of equipment and use of utensils, and in the preparation, cooking and serving of food.

Oversees and coordinates the cleaning and maintenance of culinary utensils, equipment and working area.

Maintains income and expenditure records.

Collects, records and accounts for monies received from patrons.

Maintains records required by local, state and federal auditors and health inspectors.

Performs related duties as required including duties at special meal functions.

Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Some knowledge in food preparation in large quantities.
  • Demonstrated ability to count money, product, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and merchandise food and work safely with equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn the federal and/or nonfederal meal program requirements and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, staff, coworkers, vendors and the public with courtesy, tact, patience and consistency.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: Must have at least 5 years' experience as a school food service worker and/or food service manager. Knowledge of school food service rules, regulations and procedures.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work is performed on school property. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to objects that are hot and cold. The employee is exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work area is moderate. Hazards may include working areas that are uncomfortable and warm. Duties may require exposure to extreme temperatures, hot kitchens and walk-in refrigerator and freezers. Must follow safety precautions to avoid injuries, minor cuts and bruises, burns and scalds.
