MONTESSORI PARAEDUCATOR
BROOKSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher, the paraeducator supports students to participate in their educational program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
All Paraeducators:
- Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives
- Follow Norwalk school policy to ensure student safety
- Follow the teacher's oral or written directions with accuracy
- Assist the teacher with the implementation of classroom instructional goals and Section 504 plans
- Assist students with classwork individually or in small groups
- Assist the teacher in maintaining student records of attendance
- Assist the teacher with documentation of student progress
- Assist the teacher with the preparation and distribution of lesson plan materials
- Encourage students to interact appropriately with peers
- Assist students during recess, breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, on school buses, and field trips
- Assist and support students in using computers, iPads, or other media to access the curriculum
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
Montessori Paraeducators:
- Perform responsibilities listed under all paraeducators up to and including the fifth bulleted item and;
- Supervise large group work to enable teachers to work with smaller groups or individuals
- Assist in field trips and recess supervision of children
- Organize and supervise student work areas, preparation of the Montessori environment daily
- Assist in preparing bulletin boards and exhibits
- Correct objective tests and assignments
- Maintain order in the classroom and establish a quiet learning environment; notify the classroom teacher when behavior and/or other problems arise beyond the paraeducator's control.
- Assist with toileting children as needed, in accordance with health and safety standards and procedures.
- Work with children individually and in small groups to reinforce basic skills and to check their use of Montessori materials.
- Assist in the development and construction of Montessori materials to be used in reinforcement activities.
- Share in classroom maintenance.
- Attend all in-service training/staff meetings offered by the department.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, parents, and visitors
- Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation
- Maintain a level of approachability by administration, staff, parents, and visitors
- Respond to questions and requests in a timely and appropriate manner
- Attend meetings and professional development activities as recommended by the teacher, supervisor, Principal, or ELL Instructional Specialist
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the teacher, Principal, Special Education Supervisor, or ELL Instructional Specialist
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Effective, active listening skills
- Ability to record data with accuracy
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to implement teacher directives related to instructional and behavioral goals effectively
- Organizational and problem-solving skills
Qualifications/Certificates:
- High School diploma or equivalency
- Bachelor's Degree, Preferred
- Associate's Degree in education or related field, or ParaPro Certificate, or two (2) years of college
- Two (2) years of experience working with children or young adults in a school setting, preferred
- For Special Education Paraeducators�specific experience working with students with high management needs is preferred
- May require fluency in Spanish
- Bilingual Paraeducators must demonstrate native-like fluency in Spanish or Haitian Creole
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate
Qualifications/Certificates (Montessori Paraeducator):
- Minimum of an Associate's Degree
- AMI Montessori Assistant Training Completion, or AMI Montessori teacher training enrollment.
- Experience in classroom management from a Montessori perspective and coverage.
- Patience and understanding of children with Special needs.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
EFFECTIVE DATE:
Days: Monday � Friday (37.5 hours weekly/schedule determined by Principal)
Group: Two
Bargaining Unit: NFEP
Work year: 10 Months/40 weeks
