Job Description

BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST/SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

Elementary Level

 

Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Director of Pupil Services, and in collaboration with the building-level administration, provide direct and consultative services for students with behavioral challenges; provide training and work collaboratively with building administrators, certified staff, and teaching assistants to demonstrate best practices, strategies, and techniques to enhance their ability to address interfering behaviors with the classroom setting, and provide training to parents as recommended. Conduct evaluations such as Functional Behavioral Assessments, psychological evaluations, psychoeducational evaluations and classroom observations. Provide school-based counseling, including progress monitoring of Individualized Education Program goals, and serve as a member of the Committee on Special Education and Section 504 Committee, when needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • NYS Certification as a School Psychologist (Required)
  • BCBA and/or LBA Certification (preferred)


Primary Activities 

  • Work directly with students who exhibit interfering behaviors and provide support and professional learning for staff who work with such students;
  • Collect data via direct observation and consultation with classroom teachers, and recommend appropriate modifications to support student behavior;
  • Conduct functional behavioral assessments as needed in conjunction with the building team, and develop Behavior Intervention Plans;
  • Work directly with students regarding their behavioral goals and implementation of behavior intervention plans;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, teachers, teaching assistants, and students;
  • Utilize consulting skills to ensure implementation and maintenance of intervention plans, including data collection;
  • Provide training and assistance in, and modeling of, behavioral intervention procedures and explicit teaching and replacement behaviors;
  • Develop and maintain a schedule that supports building needs, including being flexible and receptive to change;
  • Document outcomes, maintain accurate records of activities and data.
  • Provide school-based counseling services to students.
  • Progress monitoring social-emotional-behavioral goals.
  • Conduct evaluations, as assigned by the Director of PPS, including Functional Behavioral Assessments, Psychological evaluations, classroom observations, and psychoeducational evaluations.
  • Serve on the Committee on Special Education and Section 504 Committee, as assigned.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention and prevention is preferred.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Background in ABA methodology required.
  • Knowledge and experience with conducting assessments/evaluations.
  • Experience with providing school-based counseling. 

 Salary Range
$62,306 - $135,587 (2025/2026)
