Project Description
USAID Building Water Infrastructure (BWI) project is a Consulting services agreement for planning, design and construction supervision of water and wastewater infrastructure.

Internship Purpose
The objectives of the internship are to:
 Provide interns with practical, applied engineering skills and knowledge in the field of water and wastewater engineering.
 Build interpersonal skills critical for successful collaboration and team building.
 Create networking opportunities and broaden industry exposure.

Scope of Work

The intern will support Construction Team/Design in technical and administrative tasks and will undergo a structured training program aligned with predetermined objectives.

The training curriculum will encompass multiple assignments to support Construction Team/Design on various aspects of BWI’s water and wastewater activities, including site daily work, project reporting, and technical writing according to CDM Smith and USG policies and procedures.

The Trainee Engineer's tasks involve:
• Developing construction/Design skills for water and wastewater infrastructure
• Participate in preparation of preliminary construction/Design activities
• Comprehending applicable engineering codes
• Attending projects meetings
• Mastering meeting minute preparation
• Sharpening report-writing skills
• Conducting both desktop and field research including studying relevant literature
• Engaging in practical and administrative responsibilities as directed by the supervisor such as conferences and events arrangements.
• Accompanying senior engineers to project sites.

The training curriculum will be also designed to promote inclusivity and diversity, ensuring that -when applicable- tasks reflect diverse perspectives and address GESI-related disparities within BWI’s water and wastewater activities and outcomes.

Responsibilities
 Assist in Construction/Design Activities Planning: Support Construction/Design Team in the design and planning of different Work Assignments (WAs) under BWI, including drafting technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints using CAD software.
 Site Inspection and Supervision for Construction activities only: Participate in site visits to observe and document construction/ field activities.
 Data Collection and Analysis: Gather data from surveys, site inspections, and testing, and analyze it to support WAs planning and decision making.
 Comprehending project specifications and interpreting engineering drawings.
 Documentation: Help prepare and maintain project documentation, including progress reports, technical reports, and minutes of meetings.
 Collaboration with Project Teams: Work closely with Construction/Design Engineers and other team members to ensure smooth project execution and communication.
 Research and Technical Support: Conduct research on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and materials to support WAs development and innovation.
 Learning and Professional Development: Engage in ongoing learning and development opportunities, including attending workshops, seminars, and training sessions relevant to civil engineering and water sector.
 Build Network: Building professional relationships with colleagues and fostering an inclusive work environment.
 Soft Skills Development: Work on enhancing communication, teamwork, attention to detail, critical thinking, problem-solving, time management, adaptability, professionalism, and a proactive work ethic by completing online training courses and applying these skills in project tasks.
 For Design activities: Contribute to the development of design criteria for the water/wastewater systems.
 For Design activities: Review and verify flow and load calculations for the water /wastewater systems.
 Provide technical support to the team throughout construction/Design phase.
