Our plant operates at the highest standards of engineering excellence and regulatory compliance. We are dedicated to developing the next generation of engineers by offering meaningful, hands-on experience in a technically challenging and safety-critical environment.

Position Purpose: 

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to support our plant engineering team at our incineration facility. This is a unique opportunity for engineering students or recent graduates to gain direct, hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, and optimization of large-scale thermal processing and combustion systems. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced engineers to support the safe and efficient operation of our facility.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

Plant Operations Support

  • Assist engineers in monitoring and optimizing incineration plant operations and thermal processes
  • Support the inspection and maintenance of high-temperature combustion systems, boilers, and heat exchangers
  • Help evaluate plant performance data and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements
  • Assist in troubleshooting mechanical failures and equipment malfunctions on the plant floor

Engineering & Design

  • Support the design and modification of mechanical components and systems specific to incineration and thermal processing
  • Use CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) to create and revise technical drawings and plant layouts
  • Assist with stress analysis and thermal calculations for high-temperature equipment and piping systems
  • Participate in equipment upgrades and capital improvement projects

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Support the Preventive Maintenance (PM) program for rotating equipment, conveyors, fans, and combustion systems
  • Assist in conducting root cause analysis (RCA) for equipment failures
  • Help maintain maintenance logs, work orders, and equipment records
  • Participate in scheduled plant shutdowns and turnaround activities

Environmental & Safety Compliance

  • Assist in monitoring emissions control systems including scrubbers, baghouse filters, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units
  • Support compliance with environmental regulations (EPA, local air quality standards)
  • Participate in safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments
  • Strictly adhere to all plant safety protocols, OSHA standards, and PPE requirements

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, and project documentation
  • Assist in developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintenance manuals
  • Present findings and project updates to the engineering team and management

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's degree program in: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering (or closely related field)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred

Additional Information

Pay Range: $18 to $22 per hour

Benefits: Interns are considered temporary employees. Medical and basic life insurance coverage is available to temporary employees scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week immediately following 60 days of service. Employees must elect or waive medical coverage within 45 days of their eligibility date.
