Job Description

Purpose of Position: Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Safety and Security, the Safety Security Specialist serves as a district-wide resource to promote safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environments for students and staff. This position provides both school-based and mobile services that combine proactive safety practices, student behavior support, and emergency management functions. The Safety Security is a visible representative of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) who models professionalism, equity, and compassion while building trusting relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners. The position responds to district-wide incidents, supports school safety teams, and assists with after-hours and weekend events to ensure the safety and security of students and staff. This position will have a high degree of integrity and autonomy, sustain a culture of continuous improvement, and be committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment while having a growth mindset to a multi-faceted operation while having a focus on creating a positive work culture. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Mobile and School-Based Response 50% Provide rapid mobile response to behavioral, medical, and safety incidents across district schools and facilities. Support students and staff through proactive engagement, de-escalation, and restorative communication. Respond to emergency calls and incidents that impact the learning environment. Assist in planning, coordinating, and monitoring special events, projects, and safety programs. Support school and district safety drills in alignment with MMSD protocols. Operate district vehicles safely and in compliance with all driving regulations. Provide subject matter expertise in collaborations with building safety teams to implement the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and district emergency procedures. Safety, Security, and Emergency Management 25% Conduct proactive patrols, safety inspections, and event security coverage across district sites. Operate and monitor video surveillance, access control, and radio communication systems. Exercises independent judgment in identifying breaches of district security protocols. Support administrators with CCTV review, evidence collection, and incident documentation. Participate in threat assessments, physical security audits, and safety drills. Provide a visible presence during athletic events, after-school programs, and district activities. Provide rapid response and sound decision-making during behavioral, medical, or safety incidents across multiple school sites. Student and Staff Support 15% Build and maintain positive, culturally responsive relationships with students, families, and staff. Reinforce positive behavior systems and assist with post-incident restorative conversations. Collaborate with school leaders, counselors, and student services teams to support behavior intervention plans. Support MMSD’s Behavior Education Plan and commitment to Black Excellence, equity, and restorative justice. Training, Documentation, and Professional Practice 5% Maintain daily logs, vehicle reports, and detailed incident documentation. Uphold confidentiality, integrity, and sound judgment in all actions. Other Duties as Assigned 5% Performs other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees. Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values. Complete any and all district-required training. Build collaborative relationships with business partners. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions: ● Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization ● Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion ● Strong understanding of school safety, crisis response, and student behavior management. ● Ability to de-escalate conflicts and engage in restorative, culturally responsive communication. ● Ability to work both independently and collaboratively under pressure. ● Proficiency in security technologies (CCTV, radio, access control, communication systems). ● Working knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS). ● Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. ● Ability to develop positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners. ● Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately. ● Assist with safety training, drills, and professional learning for staff and students. ● Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and calmness under pressure. ● Must be able to safely restrain individuals if necessary, following district training and policy. ● Ability to handle and maintain sensitive and confidential information.
