Overview
The Project Engineer will play a key role in the pre-construction phase, helping to estimate project costs and coordinate bids with subcontractors. This position is based out of our Birmingham, AL office.

What we expect
- Supports pre‑construction efforts on assigned pursuits and projects, assisting with estimating, quantity takeoffs, scope development, and pricing analysis under the direction of pre‑construction leadership.
- Develops accurate quantity takeoffs, pricing inputs, and estimate backup documentation consistent with defined assumptions and Gray standards.
- Assists with the preparation of conceptual and detailed budgets, compiling data, documenting assumptions, and identifying questions or gaps for review.
- Coordinates with internal teams as directed (including operations, design management, procurement, and scheduling) to support constructability, phasing, and pricing accuracy.
- Assists with trade partner and vendor outreach and proposal reviews, helping confirm scope alignment and escalating risks or discrepancies.
- Supports proposal development and pre‑construction deliverables, including exhibits, narratives, scope matrices, and related documentation.
- Participates in pre‑construction meetings and reviews, preparing materials, documenting action items, and supporting assigned follow‑up.
- Learns and applies Gray’s pre‑construction tools, processes, and best practices, incorporating feedback and lessons learned to improve performance over time.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Who we want
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and a minimum of two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficient in standard business and pre-construction software tools, including document preparation, spreadsheets, email, and estimating‑related applications.
Experience with large-scale, non-residential construction projects is preferred.
Must possess basic computer skills including the ability to utilize Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), tablets and smartphones.
Should be an energetic, self-motivated individual who has a passion for collaboration and professional development.
Strong communication skills.

Generally, normal office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Overtime may be required.
