Job Description: CENTRAL STERILE TECH

General Summary: The Central Sterile Tech is responsible for sterilizing instruments, supplies, and wrapping/storing these items until ready for use. This position distributes supplies, instruments, and equipment used in patient care. This position also cleans rooms ensuring a sterile atmosphere for surgery and patient care is responsible for assisting to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions in the operating room before an operation. They assemble both sterile and nonsterile equipment, as well as check and adjust it to ensure that it is working properly.

Main Responsibilities:
• Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job
• Familiar with surgical instrumentation and set preparation
• Familiar with running autoclave
• Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures in a Surgery Center
• Performs a variety of tasks related to set preparation
• Knowledge of aseptic/sterilization/disinfection techniques, procedures, supplies, and equipment
• Knowledge of what factors can violate the integrity of sterile package
• Assists with surgical team during operative procedures as directed by supervising physician
• Participates with cleaning and set up of surgical rooms
• Communicates supply and equipment repairs to proper personnel
• Performs all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision

Education/Experience/Knowledge:
•Certification as a Central Sterile Tech or requirements for CST required

 High School Diploma or equivalent required

• Prior experience preferred
• Current CPR certification and capable of initiating cardio-pulmonary resuscitation in times of emergency
• Knowledge of principles of sterile technique
• Excellent Communication Skills

Marginal: Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 25% of the time. Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds occasionally. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Work independently and identify potentially more effective methods of work operations. Observing an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
