
Student Nurse - Med/Surg/ Oncology PRN
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed. This role performs routine supportive clinical functions under the direct supervision and delegation of a Registered Nurse. Duties may vary based on unit assignment, level of education, and institutional policy.
• Assists the registered nurse with patient assessment by monitoring parameters as delegated and reporting findings in accordance with Nursing Standards of Practice and institutional policy.
• Assists the registered nurse in planning nursing care by contributing observations related to patient status and response to prior treatments or nursing interventions.
• Assists with the implementation of nursing care by performing delegated nursing activities under RN supervision, and within the student’s approved scope of practice and clinical competency validation, including but not limited to:
o Assisting with nasogastric irrigations and nasogastric or gastrostomy feedings when permitted
o Assisting with indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterization, catheter care, and removal when authorized
o Performing unit specific procedures such as dressing changes and calculating intake and output totals
o Providing direct patient care including hygiene, positioning, ambulation, transfers, feeding, and bed making
o Assisting with patient admissions, discharges, and setup of special equipment
o Assisting with medical device care (braces, collars, splints, compression devices, etc.)
• Assists in evaluation of nursing care by promptly reporting patient responses to nursing interventions including pain management, vital signs, and elimination patterns. • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, applying principles of growth and development under the guidance of the registered nurse and in accordance with unit policies.
• Documents delegated patient care activities accurately and timely in accordance with Nursing Documentation Policy. • Performs CPR as indicated and in accordance with current certification and institutional guidelines. • Adheres to infection prevention and control standards.
• Follows all institutional and unit policies to promote patient safety.
• Performs general support activities for the unit, including running errands, obtaining supplies and equipment, and relaying messages as appropriate. Page 2 of 4
• Communicates effectively and respectfully with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare team members while maintaining confidentiality and complying with privacy regulations.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
Work Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Currently enrolled in good academic standing in an accredited pre-licensure MSN, BSN or ADN program.
• Passing grade (“C” or better) in Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing (transcript required).
• Current BLS card (AHA or American Red Cross) required. Education & Experience - Preferred
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate.
• Previous experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to universal blood and body fluid precautions, standard precautions, and basic aseptic technique in accordance with institutional infection control policies.
• Demonstrates knowledge and basic skills necessary to assist in providing appropriate care to patients on the assigned unit. Apply principles of growth and development across the life span when observing patient needs, reporting relevant findings to the registered nurse, and assisting with care as directed by unit policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish positive interpersonal relationships when interacting with patients, families, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team, while maintaining confidentiality and professional behavior.
