The Opportunity
As the Subchapter Lead in Clinical Development, Head of Pathology, you will stand at the intersection of cutting-edge science and people leadership. Based in our Tucson, AZ campus, you will lead a world-class team of pathologists dedicated to shaping the future of diagnostics and targeted cancer therapies.
In this role, you provide strategic and scientific leadership while overseeing pathology operations that support more than 100 new and existing product development initiatives and enhancements annually across Primary Antibodies, Special Stains, Digital Pathology, Companion Diagnostics and Instruments. Your team plays a critical role in enabling innovative diagnostics that support precision medicine and targeted cancer therapies worldwide.
In this role, you aren't just managing—you are mentoring, inspiring, and working hands-on with leading-edge technologies to transform patient care globally.
People Leadership & Development: Direct, mentor, and foster the professional growth of Instrua highly specialized team of pathologists and 6-7 team leaders. Drive a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. Medical oversight for day to day Path Lab activities.
Scientific & Clinical Strategy: Serve as the pathology subject matter expert within the Companion Diagnostics & Oncology business unit, ensuring scientific rigor and clinical relevance in all assay development programs.
Advanced Assay Development: Guide the team in the development, validation, and implementation of complex assays utilizing top-tier technologies including:
Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH)
Immunofluorescence (IF) and Multiplex assays
Digital Pathology and AI-driven image analysis
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with life science companies, clinical trial teams, regulatory bodies, and internal R&D stakeholders
Innovation Champion: Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging pathology technologies to maintain Roche’s position as the market leader in companion diagnostics and oncology
Who You Are:
You are a visionary leader who balances deep clinical expertise with a passion for developing people. You thrive in collaborative, fast-paced environments and are motivated by the tangible impact your work has on cancer patients worldwide.
You are a MD with US Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology
You have 10+ years of people management and leadership within a pharmaceutical, diagnostics, or major academic or medical center environment.
You have deep expertise in oncology pathology and hands-on experience with tissue-based biomarkers (IHC, ISH, Multiplex).
You have strong familiarity with development processes including digital pathology workflows, image analysis tools, Clinical Case and CAP/CLIA workflows, and CDx development
You have excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills—ability to translate complex pathology findings to non-clinical teams.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Tucson, AZ is 255,900-475,300. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
