The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual to join our Legal Department as Lawyer – POM Legal.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Legal, the successful applicant will join a dynamic team and will be responsible for providing high-quality legal advice and support to the organization, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, mitigating legal risks, and supporting business operations through effective legal counsel. The role contributes to the protection of the organization's interests by managing contracts, regulatory matters, disputes, and corporate governance activities.

In this role, you will;

Legal Advice and Support

  • Provide timely, accurate, and practical legal advice to management and business units on a broad range of legal matters.

  • Interpret and advise on applicable laws, regulations, policies, and industry requirements.

  • Draft, review, negotiate and advise on commercial agreements, service contracts, procurement agreements, confidentiality agreements and other legal documents.

  • Ensure contracts adequately protect the organization's interests and comply with legal requirements.

  • Monitor and advise on compliance with Papua New Guinea laws and regulatory obligations.

  • Assist in developing and implementing compliance policies and procedures.

  • Support interactions with regulatory authorities and government agencies.

  • Conduct legal and compliance reviews as required.

  • Support corporate governance activities, including preparation of board papers, resolutions, and corporate records.

  • Ensure compliance with corporate governance standards and internal policies.

  • Assist in managing legal disputes, claims, and litigation matters.

  • Liaise with external legal counsel and coordinate litigation activities.

  • Prepare legal correspondence, reports, and documentation related to disputes and investigations.

  • Support negotiations and alternative dispute resolution processes where appropriate.

  • Provide legal support on employment-related matters, including disciplinary processes, workplace investigations, employment contracts, and policy interpretation.

  • Advise on compliance with employment legislation and industrial relations requirements.

  • Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and comply with NPL Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all health rules and procedures

 

About You

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience;

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB)

  • Admitted to practice law in Papua New Guinea and holds a current practicing or has the ability to obtain a PNG practicing certificate

  • Minimum 3–5 years' relevant post-admission experience in private practice, in-house legal counsel, or a resource sector.

  • Experience in commercial, corporate, employment, regulatory, or litigation matters.

  • Experience working within a corporate or multinational environment is desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of labour, employment, commercial, and contract law; 

  • Experience in dispute resolution, managing litigation files and exposure to mediation would be an advantage;

  • Holds a valid driver’s license;

  • The ability to work honestly and transparently with minimal supervision and be of sober habits;

  • An excellent command of English and Tok Pisin, both written and spoken and must be willing to work with and engage with the community; and

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel & Power Point.

     

 

Mobilization Requirement 

 

This is a PNG National position, a Port Moresby office-based role on a 5/2 working week arrangement with a travel to Porgera Mine sites and other locations as when required by the role. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG Nationals and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
