Position Overview
As a Service Retrofit Foreman I - Sheet Metal, you'll lead a crew in the field to execute commercial HVAC retrofit and sheet metal installations, repairs, and system upgrades with a focus on safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. Working closely with superintendents and project managers, you'll coordinate scheduling, provide daily updates to clients, ensure accurate execution of ductwork modifications, equipment retrofits, and system installations, and drive team performance to meet project goals and profitability targets. Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a sheet metal crew on daily retrofit and service tasks, including ductwork modifications, replacements, additions, and installations for DX split systems, rooftop units, make-up air systems, VAV systems, heat pumps, and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems.
- Coordinate scheduling with superintendents, customers, and internal teams; provide daily project status updates to clients and leadership.
- Read, interpret, and execute work from blueprints, specifications, and scope documents to ensure accurate layout, fabrication, installation, and system integration.
- Oversee complete installations, retrofits, and replacements of HVAC equipment and ductwork, ensuring compliance with codes, SMACNA standards, and project requirements.
- Manage on-site functions: crew assignments, material/equipment coordination, progress tracking, and daily work logs; utilize electronic tools for timecards, scheduling, and reporting.
- Enforce safety protocols, conduct job hazard analyses, toolbox talks, and ensure PPE usage; maintain a safe work environment and document incidents promptly.
- Interact professionally with customers, providing clear communication, addressing concerns, and building positive relationships.
- Document work accurately (daily logs, reports, photos, as-builts) and ensure timely submission to office/project teams.
- Mentor and train crew members on sheet metal techniques, retrofit best practices, safety standards, and quality workmanship.
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and other trades to resolve issues, maintain schedule, and deliver exceptional results.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Yes – Direct supervision and leadership of a sheet metal retrofit crew; responsible for daily task delegation, performance monitoring, safety compliance, on-the-job training/mentoring, and contributing to crew evaluations under the superintendent's guidance.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of field experience in commercial HVAC/sheet metal installation, retrofit, and service; proven ability to lead crews and manage on-site execution.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred.
- Certifications/Licenses: Universal EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification required; OSHA 30-hour certification required; valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
- Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
- Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, rooftops, mechanical rooms, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, sharp materials, and mechanical hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.
Required Skills
- Proficient sheet metal fabrication/installation, ductwork modifications, and HVAC equipment retrofit/startup (DX splits, RTUs, VAV, VRF, make-up air systems).
- Blueprint reading, scheduling (daily updates, short-term planning), and crew coordination.
- Leadership, mentoring, effective communication (written/verbal) with teams, superintendents, clients, and stakeholders.
- Safety leadership, problem-solving, multitasking, self-motivation, punctuality, and professional demeanor.

Pay Range: $38 - $44 per hour
