Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

  • The Colleague Safety Specialist facilitates implementation of the comprehensive Trinity Health TogetherSafe program as well as regional strategies to achieve optimal patient and colleague safety outcomes.

  • Reporiting to the Director, Colleague Safety & Wellness, this individual partners with ministry leaders, colleagues and medical staff to implement and sustain safety and reliability structures, processes and behaviors. This role will use data systems in place such as THEIR (Trinity Health Employee Incident Report, VOICE), safety science, change methodology, improvement principles and creative educational approaches to achieve sustainable high reliability practices and outcomes in both patient and colleague safety domains.

  • This position is a Full-Time, scheduled 40 hour per week.

  • On-site position at Trinity Health Ann Arbor supporting our hospitals in Ann Arbor, Chelsea and Livingston County.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, nursing, engineering or related field.

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in healthcare, nursing, engineering or related field, plus additional certification as Safety Professional, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality or other related certification.

Related Experience

  • Minimum: 2 years’ experience in high reliability, organizational improvement, quality, employee health, risk management or patient and/or colleague safety leadership, or a minimum of five years of recent clinical leadership experience.

  • Preferred: 3-5 years’ experience in high reliability, organizational improvement, quality, employee health, risk management or colleague safety leadership, or a minimum of seven years of recent clinical leadership experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum: Strong knowledge of high reliability frameworks and systems. Root cause analysis knowledge and experience. Strong presentation skills. Ability to analyze data to tell the story. Coaching experience. Ability to build relationships and trust with teams. Ability to plan, organize and execute assigned duties with minimal supervision. 

  • Preferred: Strong background in improving systems and structures through the HRO lens, leading teams and people in a large organization. Ability to analyze data from different sources. Ability to solve complex problems and develop approaches to support change and improvement. Project management skills or experience.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Leadership: Leader on system wide initiatives to support deployment, measurement, continuous improvement, and sustainment of high reliability strategy.

  • Analytics: Monitors and analyzes safety data and applies insights to local strategy and improvement efforts.

  • Collaboration: Facilitates and collaborates with leaders and team members to drive safety behaviors, accountability, and outcomes.

  • Audits: Supports colleague safety audits, workplace assessments, and systemwide improvement initiatives.

  • Coaching: Coaches, mentors, and rounds with leaders to build reliability awareness and strengthen organizational knowledge.

  • Consultation: Provides consultation on safety and reliability concepts to support improvement and change management.

  • Partnerships: Partners with Risk Managers and Colleague Health and Wellness to achieve consistent, mature safety systems (e.g., debriefing, cause analysis, event classification, disclosure, alerts, learning).

  • Integration: Partners with Organizational Effectiveness, Performance Excellence, MarComm, and Experience of Care to integrate safety into systems, tools, and practices (e.g., THLS, communication, education, onboarding).

  • Facilitation: Provides project facilitation to reduce preventable harm and increase colleague safety.

  • Representation: Serves as colleague safety/risk representative on committees (e.g., sharps safety, patient movement, workplace violence).

  • Compliance: Maintains OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 logs; coordinates annual OSHA submissions.

  • Regulation: Conducts OSHA audits to ensure compliance; works with Legal and Risk on OSHA inquiries.
