Job Description

We’re hiring experts for a new Nordic Mine Waste team

At WSP, we understand that responsible mining includes the effective management of all types of mine waste. We provide advice and develop tailings and waste management approaches that align with evolving standards and best practices throughout the entire mining life cycle.

Are you looking for a role where you can help build a new Nordic team and deliver demanding mine waste management projects?

We are growing our Mining Services business and establishing a new Nordic Mine Waste team. We are looking for several specialists from different disciplines to strengthen a team working on mine waste management, tailings management facilities (TMFs), tailings storage facilities and waste rock area design as well as related advisory services from concept development through detailed design and engineering. Our work also includes Engineer of Record (EoR)-type assignments and expert roles in demanding projects.

In this role, you will help shape a new Nordic team and ways of working while delivering demanding mine waste management projects. You will also collaborate closely with international colleagues on joint assignments.

Your work focuses on risk management and safety. You help clients to make decisions that stand the test of time, meet regulatory requirements and reduce environmental impacts across the full life cycle. The role can be tailored to your strengths and experience.

We are particularly looking for:

  • Mine waste specialists (Tailings & Mine Waste Management, Engineer of Record, Independent Tailings Review Board support)

  • Geotechnical designers (TMFs, waste rock dumps, embankments and foundations)

  • Geochemists (mine waste characterisation, water quality modelling for waste areas)

What the team’s work includes

  • Reduce risk and improve safety by designing and assessing tailings management facilities (TMFs) and other mine-waste structures, ensuring solutions meet requirements and perform throughout their life cycle.

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team (geotechnical, geological, hydrogeological and environmental specialists, engineers and modellers) from concept through detailed design and expert assignments.

  • You prepare and review technical deliverables (reports, design memos, drawings and design packages, quantity take-offs and cost estimates) and, depending on your role, support permitting and stakeholder processes. Prepare technical reports, drawings, specifications, bill of quantities, and cost estimates

  • You work at the client interface, sparring on solutions and building trusted client relations

  • You contribute to proposal preparation in line with your technical discipline and role.

  • You ensure project delivery for your own work package and support project managers in executing assignments.

What we hope from you

  • A relevant university degree (e.g. geotechnical engineering, civil/environmental engineering, geochemistry or similar).

  • Knowledge of national and international design guidelines, standards and regulatory requirements (depending on your role and experience). Knowledge of national and international design guidelines and regulations

  • Experience in mine-waste management and/or the design of mine-waste structures.

  • Ability to analyse baseline data, interpret results and apply fit-for-purpose methods (e.g. design, modelling, monitoring). The ability to analyse and interpret data and apply appropriate methods (e.g. dimensioning, modelling) to solve the problem at hand.

  • Experience in consultancy and project work (e.g. client collaboration, quality, schedule and cost) or a willingness to grow into these responsibilities.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, and the ability to work smoothly in a multidisciplinary team.

  • Willingness to travel as required by projects

  • Fluent English and good Finnish language skills are important; other languages (e.g. Swedish) are considered an advantage.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Apply anyway -we look at the overall picture and the direction of your expertise. Where needed, roles can be shaped based on your experience and strengths.

What we offer

We offer a responsible expert role in a growing Nordic team, where you can do work with real-world impact: improving the safety of mining projects, reducing environmental risks and supporting clients in compliant solutions - from design through to closure. In practice, this means:

  • Opportunity to influence and build something new: you will be involved in developing the Nordic mine waste team and our ways of working.

  • Challenging TMF and mine-waste assignments across the full life cycle (from feasibility studies to implementation support and closure), depending on your role.

  • International support in your day-to-day work: the Nordic and European mining network and our global specialists as sparring partners and project support.

  • A clear growth path to more senior responsibilities (e.g. specialist accountabilities and Engineer of Record (EoR)-type assignments), depending on your experience.

  • Ability to shape your role based on your strengths and interests.
