TEACHER SPECIALIST, SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
ELIGIBILITY POOL
DESCRIPTION
The Teacher Specialist will be assigned to multiple school sites/programs and is primarily responsible for providing support for teachers, staff and families connected to special education services. The specialist is responsible for developing parent/guardian information sessions, professional development activities and compliance monitoring. The specialist is an important member of the district special education team and provides input in the development and implementation of the district's special education program for students with special needs, 3-22 years old.

Credential
Valid California Special Education Teaching Credential
Experience
A minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience as an elementary or secondary
Special education classroom teacher. Specific knowledge of current regulations and trend
pertaining to the service of children with special needs. Experience and knowledge in the area of
programs designed to meet the needs of special education students are highly desirable, as are
written and oral proficiency in a second language.
WORK YEAR
Regular school year, 186 days, 8 hours per day. Additional days during the summer/school breaks (if allotted) shall be paid at per diem rate.
SALARY SCHEDULE
Placement on regular teachers' salary schedule depending upon training and experience plus $285.29 per month for 11 months teacher specialist stipend. Additional hours are required to meet responsibilities of the funded design and plan for this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists with development and implementation of the Local Control Accountability Plan as it relates to the Special Education program.
- Works collaboratively with school staff, parents/guardians, and community to maximize student achievement academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
- Coordinates/participates/presents professional development in collaboration with Teaching and Learning for teachers and educational assistants
- Presents parent/guardian information sessions.
- Monitors specialized instruction, behavior support, and related services at assigned school sites.
- Provides direct assistance with curriculum and instruction.
- Communicates program responsibilities and other information including compliance items to school principal,staff, and parents.
- Works cooperatively with other District personnel to ensure articulation between general education and special education.
- Assists IEP teams and parents/guardians in resolving differences related to IEP services.
- Observes, consults with, and assists SAI core/self-contained teachers, substitute teachers and administrators with implementation of students' IEPs, goal-development, curriculum, and services.
- Assists classroom teachers in implementation of IEP accommodations and modifications including behavior support plans and environmental interventions. Assists with intake and placement of new students.
- Assist with IEP assessments and state assessments as needed.
- Attends IEP meetings at the request of the school site and the Special Education office.
- Attends and presents at District Special Education Advisory Committee meetings
- Assists parents/guardians as students transition to appropriate placements in accordance with the IEP.
- Assists in all aspects of compliance, including IEP timelines, prior written notices, etc.
- Maintain special education website resources.
- Attends weekly staff meetings.
- Attends conferences, trainings and workshops to remain up-to-date on best practices and current regulations related to special education.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION
Under the immediate supervision of the Executive Director, Special Education.
