Job Description:

Work with the Waterfront Director to supervise and train aquatic staff; schedule waterfront activities; fully responsible for all safety standards and most importantly the safety of our participants. Responsible for the supervision of Sail, Ski, Canoe, and Cherokee Beach Directors; approximately 200 campers, and 50 staff members with a fleet of 85 boats. Most importantly ensure all campers are safe while still having fun. Additional responsibilities include maintenance of all boats in our fleet and assisting the Waterfront and Aquatics Program Director in managing cabin life.

 

Requirements:

 

  1. 21 years of age
  2. College Preferable
  3. Various water sports abilities including but not limited to sailing, waterskiing, canoeing, and windsurfing.
  4. Basic understanding and knowledge of simple repair tasks on boats or similar workshop experience.
  5. A person who shows maturity, good judgment, creativity and experience in a variety of camp counseling situations as well as skills in programming and planning.
  6. Ability to lift a child.
  7. Ability to interact and communicate clearly with all program participants, parents, fellow staff and the public.
  8.  Must be able to participate in outdoor pursuits that include but not limited to sailing, boat driving, boat repair and should also be comfortable lifting and moving large and heavy equipment; boats, canoes, anchors, etc.
  9. Must have the ability to operate all camp vehicles to include an 8-12 passenger van.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and guide a group of campers to ensure a positive and nurturing camp experience for each participant.
  • Guard campers’ safety and welfare at all times.
  • Plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate activities.
  • Attend and complete all staff paperwork and trainings.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff.
  • Keep attendance and maintain a constant count of campers.
  • Acquaint campers with rules, activities, daily schedules, and traditions of camp.
  • Ensure all equipment and supplies are properly used and maintained.
  • Participate and assist in all camp activities.
  • Follow pre-planned schedules and arrive on time to set activities.
  • Plan and implement rainy day programming.
  • Report all injuries immediately and fill out appropriate forms.
  • Use the Behavior and Disciplinary Action Plan when correcting a camper.
  • Become CPR & First Aid certified prior to the start of camp.
  • Complete all forms for a criminal record report and background check.
  • Assist in meeting and maintaining YMCA, State, and ACA camping standards.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Maintain the safety of waterfront participants and staff
    1. Will make decisions in conjunction with waterfront directors to determine whether or not safe boating conditions exist for programming (can be affected by weather, emergencies, or staffing ratios)
    2. Supervise and run internal Ellis lifeguarding audits
    3. Maintain a daily log of all activities at the waterfront
    4. Establish a culture of safety by leading by example and reacting immediately to any unsafe practices by campers and/or staff
    5. Provide remedial training for staff members exhibiting unsafe boating
  2. Provide High Quality Programming
    1. Oversee program quality in all waterfront programs
      • Specifically watch instructors and make sure activity directors are providing proper supervision
    2. Assist in training waterfront activity instructors
    3. Be available as a resource for both activity directors and their instructors
  3. Manage Waterfront Directors
    1. Have weekly discussions with activity directors in a one-on-one setting to review any needs or areas of improvement
    2. Provide two written evaluations of waterfront directors – one at the end of session 1 and another at the end of session 3
    3. Provide a final written evaluation at the end of the summer to go in staff’s file
    4. Keep an open line of communication with supervisor regarding any staff management problems
    5. Support activity directors in their efforts to manage their staffs
    6. Schedule time off for waterfront directors (including the Pool Director)
    7. Communicate with the waterfront directors regarding any schedule changes that may affect their programs or staff
  4. Liaison for Land Administrative staff
    1. Develop a positive working relationship with land administrative staff
    2. Work with village chiefs and head counselor to schedule and run waterfront cabin activities
    3. Assist land activity directors and village chiefs in large camp events such as Campfires, Sioux/Ute day, Chapel, all camp dances, staff snacks, and Carnival Day
  5. Maintain the Waterfront
    1. Monitor the status of the fleet in conjunction with the Fleet Director and Maintenance Director
    2. Report problems to supervisor in a timely fashion
    3. Assist in coordinating boat usage allowing as many participants to utilize our programs as possible
    4. Establish a culture of caring for the boats by leading by example and holding both waterfront activity directors and instructors accountable for the cleanliness and basic upkeep of the boats
    5. Maintain a clean working environment in and around the maintenance shop
    6. Maintain Big Red (washing it and cleaning it once per week) as this will be a vehicle used primarily by waterfront directors
    7. Responsible for overall beach cleanliness and appearance
  6. Be an Effective and Impactful Leader of Staff
    1. Be a role model for staff and campers
      • Model the four character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility
      • Be on time to all events and set a standard of hard work for your staff to follow
      • Prevent negative or inappropriate influences from being a part of campers’ and staff’s time at Tockwogh (i.e. mature language/discussions, illicit materials, nicotine products, etc.)
      • Generally lead by example and exhibit the behaviors you expect of your staff members
    2. Work to cultivate and develop staff
      • Assist staff members in your area by being a support for them
      • Provide feedback regularly and in an appropriate manner
      • Identify staff with leadership skills and work to help them develop their potential
    3. Actively supervise staff
      • Be directly involved in the program delivery on a daily basis
      • Recognize staff when they exceed expectations
      • Appropriately discipline staff who do not meet expectations
    4. Enforce the rules of camp evenly and fairly to all campers and staff
