Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
To deliver the highest level of customer service through continuous improvement. Under minimal supervision, the Diesel Technician is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, reconditioning, overhaul and maintenance of customer and company heavy equipment and components. Depending on location and assignment, will be responsible for some, or all of the functions and duties listed below.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Administrative:
- Prepares accurate and
complete service reports and turns them in on time
- Prepares inspection and
appraisal reports
- Correctly charges work to appropriate
work order segments
- Communicates effectively with
Service Writer, Shop Coordinators and Shop Managers to ensure problems, nature
of repair, and status of repairs are understood and followed up on.
- Identifies and resolves
problems in a timely manner,
- Gathers and analyzes information
skillfully
- Strives to continuously build
knowledge and skills
- Follows instruction, responds
to management direction
- Maintain confidentiality
Computer Skills:
- Basic ability to search for
and enter data into a computer, read, compose, and send emails.
- Ability to type service
reports.
Technical:
- Cleans, repairs,
reconditions, and maintains equipment and components.
- Prepares, inspects, and
operates machines prior to delivery
- Removes, disassembles,
assembles, and installs components and parts
- Determines re-usability of
parts in accordance with published Caterpillar re-usability guidelines
- Orders replacement parts
ensuring that parts orders are correct and complete at the time of order
- Services and maintains
equipment sold and/or owned by the company
- Tests, measures, and adjusts
engine and machine systems and components
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots
machine and engine malfunctions and failures
- Analyzes customer repair and
maintenance requirements
- Keeps up to date with developments
in tooling, technologies and systems
- Uses safe working practices
and follows all company safety requirements
- Maintains a clean and
organized work area
- Performs maintenance
activities on new and rebuilt/repaired equipment
- Makes recommendations as to
repairs meeting warranty criteria
- Makes parts replacement
decisions assuring optimum economic re-usability
- Provides direction, training,
mentoring and guidance to support service technicians
Language and Reasoning
- Ability to read and
comprehend simple instructions and write simple correspondence.
- Ability to apply common sense
understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram
form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduation from an accredited
technical school in diesel engine and generator repair preferred
- Four years in heavy
equipment, engine or electric power generation system repair
- Caterpillar Certified 3500 Master Mechanic
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Stand, walk, sit, use hands / fingers to
handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work effectively and navigate
within confined areas of a generator enclosure.
- Must have the following vision requirements:
Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, ability to adjust focus
- Ability to lift, pull and
push 50lbs
- Stand for 3 hours, squat, kneel, climb,
and/or lay down to work on equipment
