Job Description
TJA (Transportation Joint Agreement) Mechanic.
Twelve-month position with salary and working conditions in compliance with the agreement between the Crystal Lake Transportation Union and the Board of Education.
Job Goal: To assist in maintaining the bus fleet � keeping it in proper, safe mechanical working order on a continual basis � and to provide on-the-road assistance as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Five years verifiable experience in truck and diesel mechanics
3. Ability to perform routine duties in mechanical work and daily fleet maintenance
4. Ability to work cooperatively with other people
5. Knowledge of inventory programs and recordkeeping
6. Ability to frequently life and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or
move up to 75 pounds
7. Must possess or obtain an Illinois Commercial Driver's License within 60 calendar
days after employment
8. References must be provided
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Works under the supervision of the Head Mechanic to perform necessary vehicle maintenance and
repairs.
2. Performs required bus maintenance, including all repairs which can be performed at the facility with
available equipment.
3. Performs preventative maintenance for the district's bus fleet on a regular basis and in a timely
manner.
4. Works the assigned hours for the Mechanics position and flexes the daily work schedule as needed
based upon the work flow, emergency weather and/or fleet conditions.
5. Communicates collaboratively and works cooperatively with the Transportation Department staff
regarding bus malfunctions and repairs and responds in a timely manner to requests for assistance.
6. Maintains knowledge and understanding of the mechanical skills required to successfully fulfill
responsibilities for the maintenance of a fully operational and safe bus fleet for the district.
7. Assists the Head Mechanic in training Mechanics on the Transportation Department procedures,
policies, and the role of the Mechanic in bus preventative maintenance and repair.
8. Provides on-the-road assistance as required.
9. Must be willing to adjust schedule to accommodate cold weather bus starts, plowing/shoveling/salting
and any other weather-related needs.
10. Works cooperatively with drivers to determine individual bus requirements and necessary repairs
11. Arranges for periodic inspection of all vehicles in compliance with the law.
12. Assists the Head Mechanic in maintaining an inventory of required parts and supplies necessary to
service buses.
13. Makes recommendations to the Head Mechanic regarding acquisition of supplies and equipment
required for the department.
14. Assumes responsibilities as assigned in the absence of the Head Mechanic.
15. Assists the Head Mechanic in recordkeeping.
16. Participates in continuous staff development activities to maintain and improve job-related skills.
17. Protects the confidentiality of district and office records and information unless authorized and
directed by their supervisor to provide same when requested under the Illinois Freedom of Information
Act.
18. Protects the confidentiality of student records and information according to Board of Education policy
and regulations, Illinois Student Records Act and the family Education and Privacy Act.
19. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Head Mechanic or the Director of Transportation.
Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Head Mechanic in collaboration with the Director of
Transportation.
