Lane 13 Contract and Benefits
250 Day Contract

Hourly rate: 24.45 - 27.48

Contact Information:

The Transportation Routing Technician utilizes specialized routing software to build yearly school bus routes, maintain up to date student information regarding transportation needs, and communicates routing information with drivers, parents, school administration, and other district stakeholders. This position is primarily responsible for routing Special Education students and supporting the unique transportation needs associated with those services. As the district prepares for the upcoming district split, the position may also assist with both Special Education and Regular Education routing assignments to support operational continuity and route development across both districts. The Routing Technician works closely with transportation staff, school administrators, parents, municipal agencies, and city developers to maintain accurate routing data, respond to changing transportation needs, and support safe and efficient student transportation services.

This job reports directly to the Routing Team Lead, and works closely with the Coordinator and Director.

Essential Functions 

  • Assist GIS Specialist/Routing Lead with route audits and evaluations (e.g. stops, times, road closures, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of performing route optimization, consolidations, additions, and/or timings.
  • Attends meetings, professional development training for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required for transportation components.
  • Builds new bus routes and schedules yearly using GIS data for (e.g. regular home-to-school students, special education students, field trips, athletic events, summer school, and other school related activities, etc.) for the purpose of compiling and updating the routing calendar for accuracy.
  • Collects data required for state transportation reports (e.g. lists, timings,unfunded runs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring desired bus scheduling and availability of information required by regulatory agencies.
  • Informs drivers and department personnel of route-related information (e.g. lists of new students, confidential sheets, route changes, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring routes are safely and efficiently covered.
  • Maintains GIS database (e.g. route descriptions, route map documentation, student locator records, identified geographical data, etc.) for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference for Department use.
  • Prepares a variety of routing and special reports using data generated by the GIS database for the purpose of providing users with requested information.
  • Resolves bell schedule issues (e.g. school exit delays, bell change schedule changes, school bus traffic safety issues, etc.) for the purpose of coordinating with District bell change scheduling.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties (e.g. parents, district staff, other schools, government agencies, general public, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing assistance, advice, and support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong computer and data entry skills
  • Ability to read maps and understand road systems
  • Ability to communicate clearly with staff, parents, drivers, and school administrators
  • Ability to coordinate with city developers, municipal agencies, and school staff regarding new developments, road changes, and boundary impacts
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive student information
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage changing priorities

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in school transportation or student routing
  • Experience with routing software
  • Knowledge of state and federal pupil transportation regulations
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze route efficiency and transportation data
  • Experience working with parents and school communities to resolve transportation concerns
  • Experience working in a school district or public agency
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) with school bus endorsements preferred
