Job Description


General Function:

Skilled work in the operation of moderately complex and heavy equipment.  Work involves the operation of equipment with mechanical controls, requiring proficiency and ability.  Work is performed under the general supervision of an operator, except in assignments that are routine.  Maintenance Mechanic II will be expected to know basic skills and use of all materials used in water/wastewater treatment. 

Work performance is evaluated through observation of results obtained and occasionally while work is in progress.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely operates backhoe loader and water/wastewater trucks, vac trucks, and other related types of equipment used for the construction or maintenance of water and wastewater plants.

  • Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use, and performs routine service and maintenance as needed.

  • Performs a variety of skilled tasks using equipment with mechanical controls requiring some dexterity and manipulative ability.

  • Responds to verbal requests from Treatment Operators I & II or designee while working on or near water/wastewater equipment.

  • Provides appropriate assistance as required.

  • May have to perform repairs on equipment that breaks down while in service.  May assist other water/wastewater crews in the Department in non-hazard type work when equipment is being serviced, repaired, etc.

  • Performs other job-related duties as required by Treatment Facility Operators or designees, including work in other Divisions as assigned.

  • Will be responsible to clean and wash down equipment periodically.

  • Have good working relations with Treatment Operators, supervisors, and general public.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:

  • Full-time/Regular in-person position.

  • Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.

  • Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

  • Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.


Requirements:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.

  • Two (2) years of experience in water/wastewater-related field with a minimum of six (6) months experience working in water/wastewater installation/repair.

  • Ability to learn the operations of the Water/Wastewater Treatment systems of the City.

  • The nature of the job requires physical strength, coordination, and dexterity.

  • Outside work sometimes under adverse weather conditions is required.

  • Ability to cross-train as scheduled.

  • Must have experience with pumps, electrical/mechanical equipment, and plumbing.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces, manholes, and trenches.

  • Respond to emergency callouts.

  • Must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Must possess a valid Florida CDL class “B” with a tanker endorsement license and a clean driving record.

  • Must pass a background screening process.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:

  • The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and comply with the City’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
  • The City will also verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired so the proper completion of Form I-9 is required, which includes the employee providing documents evidencing identity and employment authorization.
