
Assistant Director of Transportation Maintenance
Job Description
The Assistant Director, Transportation Maintenance is responsible for the day-to-day management of fleet and equipment maintenance operations, including generators and related assets at Georgia Military College (GMC). This position ensures all vehicles are safe, compliant and operational through preventative maintenance, repair coordination, and effective asset management, supporting reliable transportation services across the institution. This role may also provide hands-on technical support for complex diagnostics and repairs as needed to ensure fleet readiness.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Preventive Maintenance and Fleet Oversight – Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules, inspections, and service plans to ensure the safety and reliability of fleet vehicles, generators, and related equipment. Ensures proper use of diagnostic tools and shop equipment and provides technical guidance on complex maintenance issues.
- Repair Coordination and Vendor Management – Coordinate repairs (in-house and outsourced), manage vendor relationships, and ensure quality and timeliness of service. Assists with troubleshooting and diagnosis of complex mechanical issues when needed to support timely repairs.
- Fleet Availability Coordination – Partner with Operations to align maintenance schedules with transportation needs and minimize downtime
- Compliance and Safety Management – Ensure all vehicles and applicable equipment meet CDL/DOT inspection standards, safety regulations, and documentation requirements, including generator maintenance and operational readiness where applicable. Supports driver compliance efforts by maintaining required documentation and assisting with training coordination as needed.
- Inventory and Parts Management - Manage parts, tools, and maintenance supplies to support efficient operations. Ensures timely processing of purchase orders, invoices, and maintenance-related expenditures in alignment with institutional procedures.
- Maintenance Data and Reporting – Maintain accurate maintenance records and provide data to support lifecycle planning and budget decisions. Utilizes fleet management systems (e.g., FMX, ARI, or similar platforms) to track maintenance activity, ensure compliance, and support reporting requirements.
Minimum Required:
- Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology, Fleet Management, Business Administration, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related fleet maintenance experience.

Three (3) years of experience in fleet maintenance, automotive repair, or a related field

Experience coordinating repairs, preventative maintenance, or vehicle inspections

Experience using vehicle diagnostic tools, and supporting hands-on maintenance operations

Knowledge of vehicle maintenance practices, diagnostics processes, and repair coordination

Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues and support technical problem-solving

Strong organizational and coordination skills for managing multiple maintenance priorities

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within a specified time frame
- Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology, Fleet Management, Business Administration, or a related field
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fleet maintenance or automotive operations
- Supervisory or lead experience overseeing maintenance staff or operations
- Experience managing vendor relationships and outsourced repair services
- Experience with preventative maintenance programs and fleet lifecycle tracking
- Experience with fleet management or maintenance tracking software
- ASE Certification or equivalent technical certification
- Experience managing preventive maintenance programs
- Familiarity with buses, vans, and institutional fleet operations
