Who will you be working with?
Bach-Simpson is the lead Event Recorder OEM in the North American Transit market. It designs, develops, and maintains various electronic equipment for trains. The monitoring team in this division is responsible for the Bach-Simpson monitoring products and projects.
How will you make a difference?
As a System Engineer and member of the monitoring team in Bach-Simpson, you will report to the Products Line Manager, and you will be responsible for the design, commissioning, and technical support of Transit and Locomotive electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems of varying size and complexity, under the direction of more senior team members.
What do we want to know about you?
The following are the required qualifications for this role:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related technical field
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in system engineering, project engineering and product development, ideally within electronics or embedded systems
- Experience in requirements management, including requirement definition, traceability, and verification (e.g., requirement matrix, compliance tracking)
- Demonstrated experience supporting full product lifecycle activities, including: Requirements review and system definition, Preliminary and Final Design Review, First Article Inspection and validation/testing Production setup and transition to manufacturing
- Experience working with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, manufacturing, quality) and leading technical coordination across disciplines
- Ability to manage and participate in customer technical meetings, including requirements clarification, design discussions, and issue resolution
- Familiarity with embedded systems, electronics, and communication interfaces (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet) sufficient to coordinate across engineering teams
- Understanding of system integration, verification, and validation processes, including test planning and execution
- Knowledge of industry standards and certifications relevant to electronic or railway/industrial systems is an asset
- Experience with engineering documentation, including system specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), test procedures, and reports
- Knowledge of electronic and electrical systems design and programming
- Experience in circuit theory and PCB design principles, microcontrollers, embedded systems, firmware integration, and communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, etc
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams); experience with requirements or project management tools is an asset
- Ability to read, understand, and apply technical procedures, specifications, and standards
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with customers and internal stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple activities in a fast-paced project environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills, particularly in system-level issues
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be willing to travel to the customer site as required (20% or less)
- Able to travel to the US for business trips
What will your typical day look like?
The following are essential responsibilities for this role:
- Working with other engineers to bring new products from prototype to production
- Perform technical activities, including reviewing specifications, project documentation, and supporting product testing and validation
- Read and interpret electrical, PCB, and mechanical schematics/drawings
- Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including BOMs, drawings, test instructions, assembly/wiring instructions, and procedures
- Ensuring compliance with industry standards via testing and certification processes
- Lead and participate in requirements review sessions, ensuring clear understanding, traceability, and alignment with customer specifications
- Develop and maintain requirements traceability matrices from system definition through validation
- Coordinate system design and integration activities across hardware, software, mechanical, quality, and manufacturing teams
- Prepare for and contribute to key project milestones (e.g., design reviews, testing phases, production release)
- Plan and support validation activities, including FAI, type testing, and system verification in collaboration with test and quality teams
- Support production setup and transition, ensuring designs are manufacturable and properly documented
- Act as a technical interface with customers, participating in technical discussions, clarifying requirements, and resolving issues
- Monitor project progress, identify risks, and support issue resolution and decision-making
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of system-level issues during development, testing, and deployment
- Collaborate with stakeholders to continuously improve system performance, reliability, and customer satisfaction
What about the physical demands of the job?
- Ability to lift, carry, and move test hardware and equipment up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work at a lab bench performing hands-on testing, setup, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to connect and interact with small components, cables, and test fixtures.
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods depending on testing needs.
- Ability to visually inspect hardware devices and test systems.
- Ability to work in an electronics lab environment following ESD and safety protocols.
- Ability to use hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers) for assembling and maintaining test setups.
- Ability to connect disconnect various connectors on a daily basis as testing needs.
- Have manual dexterity to be able to work with various hardware for testing purposes.
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between $63,000 to $83,500 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands, and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
