Field Service Estimator

Boise, ID 83704; San Clemente, CA 92673Posted Today

Job Description

About the Role

As a Field Service Estimator, you will own the front-end operational integrity of projects. You will engage early in opportunities to gather requirements, build and refine scopes of work, and produce accurate estimates using internal tools, historical data, and industry standards.

You will work closely with operations leadership, field services, sales, and external field partners to ensure projects are priced and scoped according to execution reality — not best-case assumptions. This role is customer-facing when needed to clarify requirements and reduce ambiguity, and it is operations-focused in how decisions are made.

What You’ll Do

  • Join customer and internal discovery calls to gather technical and logistical details required to scope and quote work accurately.
  • Translate customer needs into detailed scopes of work that account for labor, materials, travel, site conditions, constraints, and risk factors.
  • Create and review estimates and draft quotes using internal tools, standards, and historical performance data.
  • Document assumptions, exclusions, dependencies, and risks clearly so internal teams and customers understand what is included and what is not.
  • Partner with field teams and subcontracted technicians to validate execution approaches and improve estimating accuracy over time.
  • Value-engineer projects by proposing alternative approaches that reduce risk, improve efficiency, and protect margin without sacrificing delivery quality.
  • Support internal staff and external technicians by clarifying scope intent, job requirements, and execution expectations when needed.
  • Build quoting efficiencies: improve templates, scope libraries, standard assumptions, and repeatable estimating workflows as the company scales.
  • Help drive consistency across projects so delivery teams aren’t forced to “figure it out in the field.”

What Success Looks Like

  • Scopes are clear, complete, and executable with minimal ambiguity and fewer last-minute surprises.
  • Estimates align closely with actual labor and material costs, protecting margin and enabling predictable delivery.
  • The number of preventable change orders and field clarifications decreases over time.
  • Field teams and partners understand what they are walking into before they arrive on site.
  • Sales, operations, and delivery stay aligned through healthy, respectful challenge when scope or profitability doesn’t make sense.
  • Estimating becomes faster and more consistent as templates and standards mature.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in field services, low-voltage systems, structured cabling, IT infrastructure, networking, or managed services environments.
  • Proven ability to scope and estimate projects where real-world constraints matter (multi-site work, distributed field teams, varied site conditions).
  • Strong understanding of how work is executed in the field — not just how it looks on paper.
  • Comfort gathering requirements directly from customers and translating them into clear, structured scopes and next steps.
  • Ability to communicate technical and operational details clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong judgment: you can identify risks early, challenge incomplete information, and defend scope decisions professionally.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple estimates/opportunities without losing accuracy.
  • Experience working with subcontractors, vendors, or distributed technician networks is a plus.
  • Familiarity with estimating tools, quoting platforms, or standards-based scope development is a plus (we can train tools; we cannot train judgment).

Benefits:

  • Opportunities for advancement
  • Extensive introduction and training in cutting edge networking technologies
  • Paid Vacation Time / Sick Leave
  • Paid Holidays
  • Medical , Dental, Vision & Life Insurance

Why Work Here

We are a well-established national IT and managed services provider with a strong operational foundation and an active growth trajectory. Our work involves complex projects that require discipline, repeatability, and real execution planning — the type of environment where skilled estimators are valued as essential to success.

This role is part of an operations-led delivery model with defined processes, internal tools, and a team structure designed to support accurate scoping and profitable execution. As we expand, you’ll play a direct role in improving how projects are scoped, quoted, and delivered at scale — with meaningful influence on standards and efficiency, not just quote output.

The position is fully remote with approximately 10% travel for larger site scoping when needed. You’re expected to be online during normal business hours, but the schedule has flexibility and is measured by outcomes. Office space is available if you prefer to work on-site occasionally, but it is not required.

If you want stability, engaging work, and the opportunity to help build repeatable estimating systems inside a growing national organization, this is that role.

How to Apply

Apply with your resume and a brief note outlining:

  • the types of projects you’ve estimated or scoped,
  • the environments you’ve worked in (field services, MSP, low-voltage, cabling, networking, etc.), and
  • an example of a time you identified a scope risk early and how you handled it.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical and operational details clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • 3+ years of experience in project estimation, field services, low-voltage installation, IT infrastructure, or managed services environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate incomplete or high-level requirements into clear, executable scopes of work.
  • Experience participating in customer-facing discovery or scoping calls to gather technical and logistical requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of how field work is executed, including labor considerations, site conditions, travel, and coordination with technicians or subcontractors.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); comfort working with spreadsheets and documentation is essential.
  • Experience using industry estimating tools or internal quoting platforms; specific tools are less important than the ability to apply standards and assumptions consistently.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple estimates or opportunities simultaneously without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Ability to identify risks, assumptions, and exclusions and document them clearly.
  • Comfortable operating in a structured environment that values margin discipline, repeatability, and continuous improvement.
