Metrology Intern


We are looking for a talented hands-on Metrology Intern that will be proactive, organized and interact well with other scientists and engineers to create the next-gen carbon nanomaterials. To be successful in this internship, a strong math and science background and a positive attitude are essential.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least a Freshman in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safe lab practices.
  • Ability to work independently and ability to collaborate on cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and priority management skills with ability to independently set priorities to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare samples and materials from R&D and production teams.
  • Operate a variety of analytical instruments and laboratory equipment used for materials characterization to generate information relevant to optical, physical, chemical, and structural properties.
  • Contribute to standard operating procedures (SOPs) including analytical method development and qualification of instruments.
  • Provide support in maintaining variety of analytical instruments, metrology tools, and laboratory equipment used for characterization of advanced materials through regular reference sample checks, calibrations and periodic preventative maintenance.
  • Process and analyze data, and document findings detailing material quality, properties, and consistency.
  • Communicate timelines for publication of data and/or any delays that may occur because of hardware or other issues.
  • Work on a cross-disciplinary team with an open mind to new ideas in a fast-paced startup company.
  • Generate reports and effectively communicate results and conclusions to team members and stakeholders.
  • Handle hazardous materials with appropriate PPE and safety measures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skilled in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database spreadsheets; JMP experience a plus.
  • Experience characterizing materials and analyzing data.
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting instruments and/or process equipment.
  • Experience analyzing data to extract relevant information and identify trends.
  • Familiar with statistical methods for data analysis.
  • Previous experience with or more of the following analytical methods: physisorption analysis (BET, BJH, DFT), XRD, Raman spectroscopy, particle size analysis, TGA/DSC, IGA, conductivity, FTIR, XRF, XPS.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires frequent fine manipulation skills, including the ability to precisely pick up and manipulate small objects with fingers, such as using tweezers to fold and place tiny foil capsules, or spatulas to measure out small masses of materials, demanding consistent hand-eye coordination throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coats, safety glasses, and additional safety items as needed.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time during laboratory experiments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Compensations Range:

The expected base salary range for this position is between

$25.00 - $32.00

The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise.

We generally do not negotiate on salary once we have made an offer.  The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise. New hires joining the company tend to be paid within the starting base pay range noted above, with opportunities to increase pay over time based on development of additional skills, competencies, and company-specific knowledge.

In addition to base pay this position is eligible for tier based bonus and equity, healthcare, dental, vision, corporate discounts, paid holidays, PTO and sick time, 401K, employee relocation plan (if applicable)
