Mechanic II - Chattanooga, TN
This is a full-time, hourly position 3rd Shift.

Job Summary:
Safely apply person’s general mechanical knowledge and personal tools to perform general repair and maintenance on semi-tractors, semi-trailers, and other types of equipment in compliance with DOT specifications. These employees have to meet all the qualifications and ability to perform the job duties of a Service Mechanic. A function of this role is to diagnose problems or record data electronically through the use of laptops or personal computers. Employees at the Mechanic II level will begin to design and fabricate specialty simple components that will be installed on equipment. This classification is also exposed to more of the confined space operations. The person holding this position has to work with minimal supervision. 

Typical duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform Annual DOT inspection on tractors and trailers.  Approximately 5% of job.
  • Assist in training of Service Mechanics.  Approximately 10% of job.
  • Perform general repairs and maintenance on all equipment.  Approximately 60% of job.
  • Troubleshoot fault codes both on tractors and trailers.  Approximately 5% of job.
  • Perform all the functions and duties of a permit required confined space requirement.  Approximately 5% of the job.
  • Ability to perform A/C Freon recovery, recharging and repairs on A/C.  Approximately 5% of job.
  • Design and Fabricate.  Approximately 2%
  • Perform service call break downs.  Approximately 2% of job.
  • Trouble-shoot and repair electrical systems.  Approximately 5% of job.
  • Rebuild components.  Approximately 2% of job.
  • Maintain housekeeping of work area.  Approximately 2% of job.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Perform Annual DOT inspection on tractors and trailers. 
  • Assist in training of Service Mechanics. 
  • Perform general repairs and maintenance on all equipment. 
  • Troubleshoot fault codes both on tractors and trailers. 
  • Ability to perform A/C Freon recovery, recharging and repairs on A/C. 
  • Design and Fabricate. 
  • Perform service call break downs. 
  • Trouble-shoot and repair electrical systems. 
  • Rebuild components.
Education/Training:
  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. 
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Experience:
  • The Department of Transportation requires at least one year of service before being qualified to perform DOT inspections or a degree from a technical college. 
  • The employee must be able to read and interpret safety instructions, job procedures and repair bulletins. 
  • Must apply variables such as how failures occur because of wear and fatigue. 
  • Employees must be able to reasonably predict wear life of a part to prevent unexpected failure on the road.
  • They must also be able to understand the importance of correctly completing the DOT testing and documentation.
Certifications and Licenses Required:
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) qualified to inspect and adjust brakes. 
  • Trucking has the forms and can supply sufficient training to pass the certification.
The Department of Transportation requires at least one year of service before being qualified to perform DOT inspections or a degree from a technical college. 

Noise Level: Loud -- area is exposed to loud noises created from mechanical tools such as heavy duty impact wrenches, cut-off wheels, grinders, circular saws, and other shop equipment. The working environment is also subject to the noises from running engines in the semi-tractors. Employees may also be exposed to blasts of compressed air that is used to inflate tires.

PPE: Required safety items include safety Glasses, steel-toed lace-up boots, gloves, hearing protection, and LOTO items. Additional safety items that these employees use include fall protection, jack stands, and tire cage that is used while inflating tires. While working in a confined space employees will have to be harnessed to lifeline retrieval devices.

Work Schedule:  Eight-hour shift.  Overtime up to a 12-hour shift is expected for continuous operations of shift work.  Employee may have days off during the week and may have to work holidays.
