Responsibilities Job Title: Fleet Manager Full-time: Permanent Location: Darlington Salary: £42,000.00 - £49,000.00 Are you an experienced Fleet Manager looking to take your career to the next level? We are seeking a motivated and skilled individual to oversee and optimise our fleet operations. As a key player in our organisation, you will be responsible for managing our vehicle inventory, ensuring compliance with regulations, and implementing cost-effective strategies to enhance efficiency. Position Summary: Manage and coordinate the Distribution Centre (DC) fleet activities, ensuring a high level of service that meets or exceeds operational expectations. Ensure that the LGV/HGV fleet is maintained to the required standards, supporting the daily needs of the distribution centre while remaining fully compliant with statutory and legislative requirements. Balance operational demands with cost control, driving efficiencies and reducing repair costs while maintaining service delivery. Responsibilities: Provide a comprehensive Fleet Management service aligned with central policies Manage external contractors, ensuring quality workmanship and cost effectiveness Support the Transport Manager in budgeting and cost control Monitor industry standards and recommend improvements in efficiency and performance Coach and influence depot personnel to improve fleet utilisation and efficiency Oversee all vehicle maintenance and repair processes Maintain Health & Safety standards relating to fleet and equipment use Audit and advise on safe and legal vehicle operations Support accident repair processes in line with insurer requirements Ensure full compliance with Operator’s Licence obligations Schedule all servicing, inspections, and repairs Ensure fleet availability meets operational requirements Control maintenance costs, invoices, and purchase orders Liaise with suppliers to minimise downtime Challenge suppliers on repair times and cost control Maintain accurate vehicle history and compliance records Monitor contractor Health & Safety compliance on-site Conduct supplier performance reviews and meetings Provide statistical cost analysis to support cost reduction initiatives Carry out minor defect repairs where required Profile Proven experience in a fleet supervisory or management role Strong organisational and planning skills; able to perform under pressure High level of Health & Safety awareness Demonstrated ability to manage service levels and cost targets Innovative and forward-thinking mindset Strong leadership and team-building capabilities Excellent attention to detail Experience working with budgets and performance targets Experience in unionised environments desirable Flexible approach to working hours Experience in HGV mechanical maintenance Experience in supplier and contract management Qualifications Technical competencies Manager CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) – Essential Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Desirable) Strong awareness of current and emerging transport legislation (Essential) Behavioural Competencies Adaptability Responds positively to change and continuous improvement Quality of Work Delivers accurate, compliant, and timely outputs Takes ownership and responsibility Service Orientation Meets operational and stakeholder needs effectively Resourcefulness Solves problems efficiently while maintaining compliance and integrity Team Builds strong working relationships and contributes to team success Additional Information This role description is not exhaustive.
