About the Position
We are recruiting for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Tom Hartvigsen’s research group in UVA’s School of Data Science. The postdoc will work on developing multi-modal machine learning methods for time series analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate novel machine learning methods
- Mentor student research
- Communicate results to team members
- Disseminate our findings broadly through peer-reviewed publications and presentations
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD degree in computer science, data science, or related fields
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Track record of top-tier machine learning publications
- Robust machine learning and natural language processing skills
- Proficient computer programming skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing language model or vision-language model architectures
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and creatively
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computing. The job may require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
Position Details
This position will remain open until it is filled. This is a full-time in-person position at the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. The initial appointment is for one year; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional year contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance. This is an exempt level, term-limited (restricted), benefited position.
Anticipated Salary: $60,000
Anticipated Start Date: October 2026

After six months of employment, full-time and part-time (20+ hours) employees in a benefits-eligible position are offered options of:
