Job Description
About Sonder
At Sonder, we believe every person deserves to feel safe, supported, and empowered to be at their best, wherever they are. We're redefining workplace health, safety, and wellbeing through a seamless blend of technology and human expertise. Sonder's mobile platform provides 24/7, real-time support from a dedicated team of safety, medical, and mental health professionals, ensuring members receive immediate care when they need it most.
Since our founding in 2017, we've grown rapidly across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Backed by Seek and Blackbird, we now support over one million members and 200+ team members globally. We're well-capitalised, scaling fast, and actively building toward an AI-native organisation.
About the Role
This is a high-ownership finance role at a critical point in Sonder's growth. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you'll take full accountability for the financial controllership engine: month-end close, statutory compliance, audit, and payroll oversight across three jurisdictions, while dedicating roughly half your time to process improvement and finance transformation.
This role exists to ensure the day-to-day runs with minimal oversight, giving the FC capacity to focus on systems architecture and broader transformation. If building an AI-native finance function is genuinely part of what you're looking for, this is the right place and role for you!
What You'll Be Doing
- Own the end-to-end month-end close process across AU, NZ, and UK entities, consistently delivered within five business days and to a high standard without close direction
- Lead annual audit preparation across all entities, acting as the primary contact for the external audit team, managing timelines, and preparing draft statutory financial statements for FC review
- Provide review and sign-off on fortnightly payroll across all three jurisdictions, maintaining compliance with local employment obligations and acting as the primary finance contact for payroll escalations
- Own all statutory compliance obligations including BAS/GST/VAT, payroll taxes, and employer returns, maintaining a forward-looking compliance calendar and ensuring no deadline is missed
- Drive a prioritised process improvement roadmap in partnership with the FC, owning execution end-to-end from process mapping through to embedding, including meaningful contribution to Sonder's planned ERP transition
- Oversee accounts payable, expense platform administration, and cashflow visibility to support FC and CFO decision-making
What You'll Bring
- CA/CPA qualified with a minimum of eight years post-qualification experience, including at least three years in a corporate finance environment operating at a senior level with minimal oversight
- Proven ownership of a month-end close process and direct experience leading an external audit end-to-end, including preparation of audit files and statutory financial statements
- Demonstrated track record of identifying and implementing process improvements through technology or automation - this is a core requirement, not a nice-to-have
- Confidence managing compliance obligations across multiple jurisdictions without close direction
- Comfort working in and actively improving a systems environment; experience with Xero is an advantage, as is familiarity with Subscript and Aleph
- A genuine curiosity about emerging tools including AI, and the initiative to bring recommendations forward with a clear view on fit and feasibility
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships quickly across finance and the broader business
