Job Description

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to lead the development and implementation of next-generation multidimensional ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (mD UHPLC) analytical platforms. The rapid shift toward highly complex and multi-modal biotherapeutics, such as multispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, complex antibody conjugates, and new gene-editing components, demands analytical capabilities beyond traditional one-dimensional chromatography. Establishing a suitable and robust control strategy for complex modalities requires a comprehensive physico-chemical characterization of these materials.

In this role, you will bridge critical gaps by designing and deploying automated multidimensional UHPLC-MS workflows. By eliminating tedious offline sample preparation and preventing sample artifacts, these innovative workflows will offer unprecedented resolving power for variant/impurities characterization directly from complex matrices. This position offers a unique opportunity to build a center of excellence for advanced separation techniques, directly shaping control strategies and accelerating timelines across Genentech’s next-generation portfolio.

The Opportunity

This postdoctoral fellowship offers a rare convergence of cutting-edge academic exploration and high-impact industrial application. By joining our team, you will unlock unique opportunities to:

  • Drive Next-Generation Innovation: Overcome traditional one-dimensional UHPLC limitations by implementing online, multidimensional orthogonal separations for in-depth physicochemical characterization and early-stage attribute screening.

  • Decode a Next-Generation Pipeline: Deploy the advanced methods across an incredibly diverse biotherapeutic portfolio, including multispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, complex antibody conjugates, nucleic acid molecules, and cell and gene delivery systems.

  • Exercise Cross-Functional Influence: Partner with international experts in multidimensional UHPLC, serving as a critical bridge between Research, Molecular Assessment, and Development across the Genentech/Roche networks.

  • Cultivate Thought Leadership: Champion Genentech's scientific edge by publishing high-impact papers, presenting at international conferences, and contributing to the broader scientific community.

Who You Are

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Engineering.

  • Proven track record of success in designing, developing, and qualifying robust analytical methods for protein and/or nucleic acid characterization, demonstrated by a strong publication record as primary author in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with high-performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), specifically Orbitrap platforms, across diverse analytical workflows (e.g., peptide mapping, intact/subunit mass analysis, oligonucleotide mapping, etc).

  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively within highly matrixed, cross-functional project teams, with excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and scientifically driven researcher with a creative and agile approach to complex problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong foundational knowledge of chromatography and mass spectrometry concepts; hands-on experience with multidimensional liquid chromatography (e.g., 2D-LC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for complex structural elucidation.

  • Proven experience characterizing complex biotherapeutic formats (bispecific mAb, ADCs, etc) and complex nucleic acids (mRNA, plasmid, etc).

  • Proficiency with advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry data-processing software suites, such as BioPharma Finder, Protein Metrics/Byos, or Chromeleon.

The expected salary range for this position, based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California, is $100,000 to $106,500. Actual compensation will be determined based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Benefits

Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.
