Endoscopy Technician
Job Description
Job Summary:
Provides technical support and patient care in endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the physician and the registered nurse.
Job Responsibilities:
Assists physicians and nurses with performing specialized procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP). Assistance may include: positioning the patient, providing assistance with patient 's comfort measures and support for alleviating pre-procedure anxiety, connecting electrocardiogram (EKG) leads inserting bite blocks, placing grounding pads for the provider to maintain visual clarity of mucosa, providing irrigation as needed, and advancing or holding the endoscope as directed by the physician using techniques to help maintain proper insufflation.
Prepares the endoscopy suite according to the scheduled procedure and physician preferences including, but not limited to: scope set-up, labeling irrigation solutions, and having all the supplies readily available. Scope set-up includes ensuring the scope functions with adequate air insufflation and irrigation, along with adequate video quality.
Processes tissue and bodily fluids specimens, including retrieving tissue specimens, separating into the corresponding lab containers, properly labeling the specimen, and delivering to the designated lab department.
Selects and operates instruments, such as biopsy forceps, polypectomy snares, hemostatic clips, various cautery probes, and retrieval nets/baskets as directed by physician during procedures.
Performs endoscope high level disinfection and processing.
Maintains the gastrointestinal (GI) procedure area in a clean and safe condition.
Ensures necessary equipment and supplies are available for procedures.
Performs the duties required for proper use of the decontamination room.
Assists with maintaining the inventory supplies.
Operates the software to select the correct patient and procedure.
Utilizes safe lifting techniques and appropriate assistive devices.

Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
