Location: New York, NY 

Department: Finance & Accounting 

Reports To: Corporate Controller

Position Summary

AKAM is a leading residential property management company specializing in the management of condominiums, cooperatives, and homeowners associations throughout New York City and South Florida. We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our corporate finance team. Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller, this role will be responsible for supporting the company's corporate accounting functions, financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, month-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain general ledger entries and account reconciliations.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, and account analyses.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Support the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reports.
  • Monitor and analyze corporate expenses and variances against budget.
  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable activities as needed.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Assist in maintaining internal controls and identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to gather financial information and resolve accounting-related issues.
  • Support special projects, financial analyses, and ad hoc reporting requests from senior management.
  • Maintain accurate and organized accounting records and documentation.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 2–5 years of accounting experience, preferably within real estate, property management, residential management, or related industries.
  • Experience working in a multi-entity environment is preferred.
  • CPA designation or CPA-track candidate is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and data analysis functions.
  • Experience with accounting and ERP systems; experience with Yardi, MRI, or similar real estate accounting software is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion with confidential financial information.
