Director, Government Relations & Advocacy
Job Description
Inspired HR is partnering with a respected Alberta-based industry association on a confidential search for a Director, Government Relations & External Affairs.
This is not a traditional corporate affairs role.
This is an opportunity to help shape national and provincial conversations around energy, competitiveness, affordability, workforce development, and Canada’s economic future.
The organization is looking for a strategic, politically astute, and relationship-driven leader who can build influence, strengthen advocacy efforts, and elevate the voice of the members at a critical moment for the industry.
This individual will work closely with executive leadership and industry stakeholders to help build and modernize the organization’s government relations and advocacy function while actively engaging in the work itself.
Key areas of focus include:
- Building and deepening relationships with federal and provincial governments, regulators, policymakers, and industry partners
- Influencing policy discussions related to emissions, electricity regulations, labour mobility, competitiveness, Indigenous-led projects, and workforce challenges
- Helping ensure the members have a stronger voice in policy conversations
- Leading advocacy initiatives, policy development, stakeholder engagement, and external communications efforts
- Representing the organization in meetings, consultations, committees, and industry forums
- Supporting strategic messaging and helping shape the broader narrative around innovation and economic impact
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- Experience in government relations, public affairs, advocacy, policy, or external relations
- Strong political instincts and an understanding of how Canadian federal and provincial policy environments operate
- Credibility with senior stakeholders across government, industry, and associations
- The ability to influence, build consensus, and navigate complex stakeholder environments
- Executive presence paired with a practical, low-ego, “roll up your sleeves” mindset
This role will appeal to someone who wants more than a corporate affairs function buried inside a large organization.
It offers:
- A genuine seat at the policy table
- High visibility and meaningful influence
- The opportunity to help shape one of Canada’s most important industries during a period of transition and transformation
- A lean, entrepreneurial, member-driven environment where impact matters more than hierarchy
