
Assistant Produce Manager
Job Description
The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in leading all aspects of the produce department. This role ensures fresh, high-quality product availability, strong merchandising execution, and excellent customer service while driving sales and supporting team performance.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations- Assist in overseeing daily produce department functions including receiving, stocking, trimming, and merchandising
- Ensure all products meet company standards for freshness, quality, and proper rotation
- Maintain full, visually appealing displays that align with merchandising plans and seasonal programs
- Support ordering and inventory control to meet customer demand and minimize shrink
- Help supervise, train, and coach produce associates to ensure strong performance and engagement
- Delegate daily tasks and follow up to ensure completion of department priorities
- Lead by example with strong execution, work ethic, and customer service
- Act as department lead in the absence of the Produce Manager
- Provide friendly, knowledgeable assistance to customers with product selection and inquiries
- Educate customers on product usage, seasonality, and freshness
- Resolve customer concerns quickly and professionally
- Maintain proper rotation practices (FIFO) to ensure product freshness and reduce waste
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering to prevent out-of-stocks and overstock conditions
- Identify shrink issues and support corrective actions to improve profitability
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and temperature standards
- Maintain a clean, organized sales floor, prep areas, and backroom
- Follow all company policies and regulatory requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous produce or grocery experience preferred
- Leadership or supervisory experience is a plus
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and reaching
- Comfortable working in wet and refrigerated conditions
- Fast-paced retail setting
- Exposure to varying temperatures and perishable products
- Flexible scheduling including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
- Strong attention to quality, freshness, and presentation
- Effective leadership and team development skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive results
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to service excellence
