Why this role matters
When someone reaches out in a moment of crisis, your voice may be the first calm moment they’ve had all day. As an Emergency Relief Worker, you’ll support people experiencing financial stress, emotional overwhelm and, at times, acute distress. Every call is an opportunity to listen deeply, steady someone who feels lost, and help them feel safe and supported again. Your work restores dignity, strengthens wellbeing and brings hope into situations that can feel incredibly heavy for the people reaching out.
About the role
This role is fully phone‑based, providing emergency relief assessments, triage and support to community members with a wide range of presenting needs. You will speak with people experiencing financial hardship, housing instability, family and domestic violence, and at times, suicidal ideation. You’ll determine appropriate emergency relief assistance, provide referrals, and ensure callers are connected with the right supports quickly and safely.
Based at Tea Tree Gully Corps in Modbury SA, this permanent full-time role offers hybrid flexible working arrangements, with a minimum of two days per week in the office. Pay is in accordance with SCHADS Level 3.1.
How you will make an impact
Provide compassionate, person‑centred phone assessments
Triage presenting needs, including high‑risk situations, and escalate appropriately
Determine practical emergency relief assistance that can ease immediate pressure
Connect callers with internal and external services that support safety and wellbeing
Maintain accurate and respectful client records
Identify risks and notify the relevant Line Manager promptly
Recognise service gaps and contribute ideas for improvement
Work collaboratively with Corps and local mission partners
Uphold TSA policies, procedures and the Doorways Model of Care
Contribute to a positive, supportive team culture
What you will bring
Certificate IV in Community Services or related field (minimum)
Diploma in Community Services or related field (preferred)
Relevant experience in the community services sector
Confidence supporting people experiencing distress, crisis or complex needs
Ability to work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds
Calm, grounded presence in challenging or emotionally charged situations
Strong communication skills using plain English
A collaborative, team‑focused approach
Ability to maintain accurate records and follow practice guidelines
Experience in fast‑paced environments (highly regarded)
A current SA employee Working with Children Check
