Description of Duties:
The Instructor of Science (Biology) position reports to the Morganton Chair of Science and is responsible for the instruction of three classes each semester and two classes each January Term.
General duties include:
Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals
Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills
Hold tutorial sessions as outlined by the department
Regularly monitor and evaluate students’ progress
Provide students with resources and feedback on their performance
Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning
Model for students responsibility to self and others
Follow NCSSM’s philosophy, policies, and procedures
Attend departmental, discipline, faculty meetings; effectively collaborate with colleagues
Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities
Participate in one or more of the following activities:
Serve as academic advisor, sponsor a club, competition, or event
Serve as an officer of Faculty Senate
Provide administrative support such as managing Teaching Assistants
Provide information, service, and expertise to other schools and organizations
Assist students on special projects, independent and individual study, and seminar-based studies
Participate in the Admissions Process by recruiting, selecting, and advising prospective students
Participate in NCSSM alumni activities
Provide assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.
Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions. Occasional travel with students is expected in association with science extracurricular activities and/or scientific meetings.
The position is a full-time, 10-month appointment in the Department of Science at the NCSSM-Morganton campus, with full benefits through the state of North Carolina. Additional paid employment is possible during the summer months for interested instructors.
Specific duties:
Teach 3 class sections each semester and one 4-week or two 2-week January Term courses. Adopt core NCSSM science courses and develop new elective and interdisciplinary courses. Teaching responsibilities, as determined by the Chair, will be primarily residential classes but may include online teaching assignments. Specific courses for 2026-2027 will include two sections of Foundations of Data Science, with the remainder of the teaching load consisting of biology focused courses such as Classical Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Neuroscience, Evolution, Climate Change Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology and Research Experience in Biology.

Management Preferences:
Experience teaching high school or undergraduate biology/science with a quantitative approach and a commitment to engaging gifted and motivated students in face-to-face and online classrooms.
Enthusiasm for student-centered, hands-on lab activities and familiarity with educational and laboratory technology.
Interest in emphasizing quantitative and computational approaches to science content and incorporating the concepts and techniques of data science.
Ability to code in one or more programming languages and familiarity with statistical testing of scientific data sets.
Experience mentoring science research.
Minimum Education and Experience

Education and Experience:
Master’s degree or higher in Biology, a related Natural Science or Science Education with demonstrated teaching experience. Alternatively a Master’s degree or higher in a technical field such as computer science or engineering, with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, a related Natural Science or Science Education with demonstrated teaching experience. Preparation for teaching a student population with a broad range of background knowledge as shown by training or experience.
A Master’s degree is required. Candidates currently pursuing their degree must provide proof of degree conferral by the hire date.
