Location: Onsite at our Downtown Grand Rapids clinic
The Health Information Technician performs tasks to keep patient records confidential, accurate, and in line with regulatory standards. Must adhere to the organizational Policies, Procedures, Code of Ethics, and all licensing and accreditation standards of the position. Must represent the organization’s Mission in all actions and communications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare records for capture in the electronic chart, ensuring proper image clarity and quality in accordance with HIPAA, HITECH, Meaningful Use, and organizational guidelines.
- Release information to persons and agencies according to regulations, ensuring legal confidentiality standards are followed per HIPAA and State guidelines via fax, print, or electronic format.
- Accurately process electronically transmitted information using a variety of tools.
- Perform detailed peer audits to ensure accuracy and quality control.
- Assist in maintaining the integrity of the patient electronic health record.
- Maintain an acceptable measured productivity and audit percentage.
- Maintain and utilize reference materials appropriately and effectively.
- Train and support individuals in relation to Health Information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
- 10-key by touch
- Data entry
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines
- Understanding of medical and behavioral health terminology, anatomy, physiology, surgery, diagnostic testing, radiology, pathology, pharmacology, and various medical specialties
- Operate scanning software/equipment and other electronic tools
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards
- Microsoft Office computer skills
- Working knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

EDUCATION / LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:
- Required: High School / Equivalent
- Preferred: Health Information Technician certification
EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience with data entry, 10-key by touch, medical terminology, release of information in a health care setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job listed above.
