Under the Direction of the Nurse Manager and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), provides care to OBGYN patients and uncomplicated and high-risk OB patients at both the Obstetrics Services and Perinatal Medicine Specialties practice, and GYN Surgical Specialties, UCSF Department of Women’s Health. The LVN will play a critical role in the patient experience including optimizing clinic flow, providing in and outreach to patients and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient centered environment.
In collaboration with the physician and nursing staff, the LVN has the clinical responsibility for maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff, and for daily operations. The LVN is a team player who works closely with others and who is flexible in dealing with the changing priorities. S/he is a self-reliant individual who synthesizes his/her knowledge of practice operations in order to problem-solve, prioritize and facilitate complex transactions in the course of his/her daily activities. S/he is responsible for administering medications, assisting with a variety of procedures, practicing basic assessment of patient medical and psycho-social needs, participating in patient education, and assisting medical providers in a variety of ways. All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient’s physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs.
The Licensed Vocational Nurse has excellent oral and written communication skills; can work well with minimal supervision in a complex, fast pace and challenging environment. S/he is sensitive to the needs of patients, staff, and providers at all times. This position makes a difference for patients in an outpatient care unit by providing excellent nursing care and customer service, facilitating and ensuring the accuracy of the information flow between medical, hospital staff and departments to maximize unit efficiency. S/he consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor and as well as demonstrating UCSF’s PRIDE values and the AIDET fundamentals of communication in all patient care and stakeholder interactions.
The LVN will utilize computer skills in ApeX and other UCSF computerized programs. This individual supports the standards of the policies and procedures of the practice, and is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of pharmacology and competency in modes of administration, and complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and administrative and clinical practice. S/he is required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center. This job requires the flexibility to work at any UCSF location.

Daily Duties
Open rooms - turn on warmers.
Fill all rooms with instruments in AM, replenish as needed.
Review provider schedules and pull all instruments needed for the day.
Review LVN schedule make sure all orders for medications are current and patients are within parameters.
Set-up rooms for procedures and make sure all supplies available.
Enter info from existing records for patients who transfer care to UCSF into APeX chart.
Review State Genetic Testing results and record them in APeX.
Plan labs needed for visit.
Set up GBS including requisitions.
Room patient – gather info on reason for visit
Complete APeX psycho-social assessment and medication review for the new OB patients.
Act as a OB Team CPSP program lead for patients, including completing necessary assignments.
Take BP and weight.
Obtain urine samples for patients who require it
Take all specimens and pair them up with completed requisition forms. Note in specimen log what was sent and initial.
Clean rooms and equipment per infection control procedures.
Use APeX board and DOT system to track patient in office.
Empty used instruments buckets after each patient and hand-wash.
Wrap and tag instruments.
Check refrigerator and e-meds daily and record in log.
Restock rooms of items used or depleted.
Keep a running log of items that need to be reordered.
Check all temp logs.
Put away supplies in cabinet at the end of the day.
Weekly or bi-weekly as needed:
Check all medication and liquids for expiration and discard.
Check all expiration dates of swabs, thin preps, charo, Chlamydia, formalin, etc.
Make list for reorder.
Restock entire room --- drapes, gowns, restock entire cabinet.
Restock nurses station drawers.
Restock Wound Box supplies.
Check all blood tubes for expiration dates.
Make list of thing that need to be ordered from pharmacy and PMM.
Clean refrigerators (medication and specimen) every week.
Restock any needed paper forms in patient rooms.
Fax temperature log to Nursing Administration.
Monthly as needed:
Practice Self-Assessment audits
SPD audits
POCT audits
POCT testing as needed
Check specimen refrigerator for expired tubes
Go through lab back office supplies and look for expired items
Reorder any items needed
Clean area
Required qualifications:
Experience working in a fast-paced OBGYN setting
Experience providing injections and drawing labs
One to three years of related experience in an ambulatory environment
Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
Excellent communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
Obstetrics & Gynecology experience
LEAN methodology
Ambulatory/outpatient experience
License/Certifications:
Current Licensed Vocational Nurse in the State of California
Current American Heart Association BLS
