
SHOP LEAD
Job Description
SUMMARY
- Primary responsibility is to perform skilled and complicated vehicle repair and mechanical work on heavy duty diesel trucks or equipment in accordance with dealer and factory standards, with minimal supervision. Train and assist apprentice technicians in daily work duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Perform trouble-shooting on major problems
- Assists technicians in all phases of repair work as needed.
- Work with and train apprentice technicians
- Inspects and services vehicles when they are delivered to UOS and makes repairs and adjustments.
- Reads job order and observes and listens to vehicle to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures.
- Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with Utility One Source and factory standards.
- Cleans and properly equips assigned area to perform all necessary repairs to equipment.
- Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on vehicles, and makes adjustments.
- Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired vehicle to verify conformance to specifications.
- Fabricates special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings.
- Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts.
- Prepares inspection reports, work orders and time cards completely and accurately to insure information can be tracked and updated for future reference.
- Tags all warranty and core parts and takes to area for return, insuring proper credit is allowed.
- Examines the vehicle to determine if additional safety or service work is required.
- Advises service writer or service manager immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the time promised.
- Documents work performed.
- Road-test vehicles when required or refer to the test technician.
- Uses and maintains all necessary shop equipment required to complete any repairs or inspections.
- Keeps shop area neat and clean and be able to account for all Utility One Source tools at all times.
- Ensures that customers’ trucks and equipment are kept clean.
- Attends factory-sponsored training classes.
- Must have a working knowledge and understanding of safety requirements, and practice them.
- Must refer to MSDS when using any chemicals, substances and materials, understanding the MSDS information, and abiding by MSDS required personal protective equipment. Must wear gloves, safety glasses and other PPE for all tasks requiring their use.
- Understands and follows federal, sate and local regulations such as those governing the disposal of hazardous wastes.
- Disposes of used oil, grease, antifreeze and filters in the assigned location to insure EPA compliance.
- Attends UOS safety training and follows all safety requirements.
- Must work with and for all departments in harmony.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This job has some supervisory responsibilities: Supervise technicians in absence of Shop Manager
- Receives repair orders from Service Manager so time may be charged out properly.
- Advises Foreman if additional repair work is necessary
- Check and review work in process and follow up for completion as scheduled.
- Work with the Service Manager in managing the Technicians and the scheduling of repairs to maximize work efficiency and quality of work performed.
- Create work schedules and assign tasks where appropriate to employees. Give feedback to management on work performance, employee issues and concerns, and safety.
- Work with Service Manager to set sales goals and gross profits goals that are realistic and attainable.
- Provide customer service at a high level to all customers, including but not limited to assisting the Service Advisor in greeting customers, selling service labor, writing repair orders, and estimates the cost of repairs within set guidelines.

EXPERIENCE
Requires a minimum of ten years of direct experience as a heavy duty diesel truck mechanic.
Will need to have own tools.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents; ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must also possess the ability to speak effectively with customers or employees of organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
High mechanical skills with heavy trucks and heavy equipment. Highly detail oriented and organized in work. Acceptable written and oral communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a customer service focus with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving and results. Must have initiative and the ability act and operate independently with minimal daily direction from manager to accomplish objectives. Must possess a strong desire to learn.

The employee is required to seek assistance in the lifting of more than 100 pounds or use a crane or hoists. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
