Job Description
Calendar and Compensation
- $23.63 - $33.23 hourly (CSEA Range 1)
- Work year is 206 days, 11 months, 6 hours per day
- Bilingual Spanish signing incentive available (one-time, prorated)
- Bilingual (Spanish) stipend of $100.00 monthly
- Generous health benefit options (see pg 2), including several that require no employee contribution for coverage of self.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of a teacher or administrator, provides instructional support and services to Emergent Multilingual students. Shall possess the skills and knowledge necessary to work in an instructional setting with students who are not proficient in English.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Support Emergent Multilingual Learners to master grade-level content and skill standards initially introduced by the teacher
- Provide in-the-moment support as needed to:
- fill gaps in students' background knowledge and skills
- support the building of academic habits
- support students' mastery of grade-level content and skill standards
- Assist students with using computer programs, reading, writing, math and other academic skills.
- Support Emergent Multilingual students to improve their comprehension and production of English
- Translate oral or written English into students' primary language for students only as needed to support students' comprehension and demonstration of grade-level knowledge and skills.
- Support students to focus on academic tasks, behave appropriately, and self advocate in the classroom.
- Supervise students and assist with maintaining order and discipline in the classroom and other academic settings and during emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, etc.
- Help orient and integrate new students into the school by informing them about the policies that affect them, school supports available to them, and student activities and clubs they can join.
- Refer students to support services (community liaison, counselor, social-emotional counseling, etc.) as needed
- Help Emergent Multilingual students with study problems and monitor their understanding of in-class instruction
- Communicate regularly with classroom teachers about what the Emergent Multilingual students in their classroom understand and what they need more support with.
- Assist with career materials and administer language placement tests and other classroom tests as requested by a teacher.
- Assist with the administration of required state assessments (ELPAC, SBAC, etc.)
- Interpret in Parent Advisory Committee meetings.
- Translate letters and forms sent to parents.
- Interpret and translate for parents, students, counselors, deans, health clerk, and psychologists and other staff as needed.
- Perform other duties / skills related to the job description as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years college (48 semester units)
- Experience working with teenagers is preferred.
- Ability to speak and write fluently in Spanish or another language
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to type and operate basic office equipment.
- Ability to work with students in various settings to reinforce learning of material and skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Ability to perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating, maintaining routine records, operate basic office equipment, and utilize basic computer skills.
Contacts Frequent contacts with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Physical Effort/Work Environment
High school classroom and office environment. Moderate physical effort.
