The Steelmaking Superintendent is a senior operational leader with full ownership of melt shop performance, responsible for integrating daily execution with long-term operational strategy across Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), secondary metallurgy (VTD/VD), and continuous casting operations.

This role combines strategic leadership, KPI ownership, and deep technical expertise to drive safe, reliable, and cost-effective steel production. The Superintendent sets direction for metallurgical practices, production systems, and workforce capability while ensuring alignment with enterprise goals in safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance.

Job Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a zero-harm safety culture with full ownership of safety performance, ensuring compliance with all OSHA, EPA, and corporate standards; drive proactive safety systems (audits, risk assessments, behavioral programs) while leading incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of sustainable corrective actions, and maintaining accountability for all safety KPIs including TRIR, near misses, and incident rates.
  • Serve as the strategic and operational owner of the Melt Shop, leading end-to-end operations across EAF, secondary metallurgy (VTD/VD), and continuous casting while aligning daily production with long-term business strategy; develop and execute operational plans that optimize capacity, throughput, and constraints, balance flow across all process areas to maximize output, and maintain full accountability for financial performance including budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and cost optimization.
  • Own and drive Melt Shop performance through full accountability for key operational KPIs—including safety (TRIR, incidents), production throughput, tap-to-tap time, yield and recovery, cost per ton, energy consumption, quality (downgrade/defect rates), and equipment reliability—leveraging data analytics and real-time systems to inform decision-making; lead structured performance management routines to identify gaps, implement corrective actions, and deliver sustained operational improvements.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority for melt shop operations, establishing and directing metallurgical standards across EAF melting, charge optimization, slag practices, deoxidation/alloying, vacuum degassing, and continuous casting; provide hands-on leadership to resolve complex metallurgical and production challenges, while standardizing best practices and partnering with Quality and Engineering to reduce defects, minimize variability, and ensure consistent product quality and process stability.
  • Partner with Maintenance to ensure maximum equipment reliability and availability across all melt shop assets by influencing and strengthening preventive and predictive maintenance programs; lead the planning and execution of outages for furnaces, refining units, and casters, while identifying and prioritizing capital improvements that align with operational strategy and long-term asset performance.
  • Lead and develop a large, multi-level workforce in a 24/7 unionized environment, fostering a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement; coach and develop supervisors and leaders, drive succession planning and talent pipelines, and align workforce strategies—staffing, training, and performance management—with operational objectives to ensure sustained organizational performance
  • Drive cross-functional integration by collaborating across operations, maintenance, quality, engineering, and scheduling to ensure seamless execution; align melt shop performance with downstream operations and customer requirements, while leveraging an enterprise mindset to influence plant-wide results and advance overall business performance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, operations, business or related field required.
  • 10+ years experience in Steel manufacturing with casting and melting experience required.
  • 5+ years of leadership in EAF-based operations preferred
  • Experience Managing in a union environment: grievances, contract negotiations preferred.
  • Experience in RCM programming, Continuous Improvement, Operational Transformation required.
  • Experience in lean manufacturing, six sigma and operational excellence methodologies required.
  • Experience leading 24/7 operations with full operational ownership.
  • Proven experience managing budgets, cost control, and capital planning.
  • Ability to lead through change and growth with a strong executive presence and communication skills.
  • Strong background in melt shop processes, metallurgy, and steel production systems required.

Compensation Range:

$210,000 - $235,000
