POSITION SUMMARY
The Lieutenant assists the Chief, Major, and Captain with coordinating departmental operations regarding dissemination of departmental directives and guidelines, supervisory disciplinary referrals, logistical support of school-based officers, and record-keeping functions. The Lieutenant supports the Command Staff with planning and executing strategic long-range goals, objectives, organizational structure, and overall direction for the department. The incumbent will assist school administration and staff in providing a safe and secure environment for students through proactive planning and immediate response to situations while maintaining law enforcement responsibilities within assigned zones through supervision and daily contact with assigned Sergeants, Investigators, Corporals, Alarm Response Officers (AROs) School Resource Officers (SRO's).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public safety, or related field required
*Additional years of equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement
Certifications/Licenses:
• Valid Georgia driver's license is required
• Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification required
• Must hold a PBLE classification if POST certified after 1982 or the equivalent prior to 1983
• General or Master Instructor POST certification preferred
• Supervision and Management, Intermediate and Advanced certification preferred
• National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification preferred
• Must be able to maintain certifications required by standard operating procedures and state law
Experience:
• 7 years of law enforcement experience required
• 4 years of experience as a Sergeant required
• Experience with Atlanta Public Schools Police Department (APSPD) or another school police department preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assume responsibility for immediate supervision of sergeants and line officers in their absence, civilian security monitors and contract personnel
• Work closely with sergeants, the principal, and staff of the school to foster a better understanding of the law enforcement function to maintain a secure learning environment
• Proactively work with the school's leadership team and collaborate with school's administrative team on safety protocols and procedures
• Serve as first responder supervisor in collaboration with site-based personnel and/or municipal public safety personnel to critical incidents on school property
• Schedule Officers for special events and plan patrol responsibilities
• Manage investigations of incidents and crimes that occur on District properties
• Required to attend scheduled shift during regular business hours as mandated
• Attend supervisory and command staff meetings; communicate relevant information to SRO's
• Communicate and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies, social services and court services
• Develop and conduct training classes as required for all personnel
• Investigate complaints made by administrators, staff and the public
• Respond to high profile incidents throughout assigned area of responsibility
• Review and develop policies or policy revisions
• Review reports and associated paperwork/documentation
• Review Sergeant, Investigator, Corporal, ARO and SRO performance and capabilities within assigned zones
• Supervise, consult, direct, advise, and instruct Sergeants, Investigators, Corporals, AROs and SROs on law enforcement issues relevant to duties
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site during regular business hours and as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Knowledge of Atlanta Public Schools policies and procedures
• Demonstrated experience working with youth and culturally diverse populations
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage students, staff, and internal and external stakeholders
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Outlook) and standard office equipment and systems, such as incident reporting software, copiers, scanners, and fax machines
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities simultaneously while meeting deadlines
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions
• Ability to collaborate effectively with District personnel, community partners, and the general public
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals

• Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict
