Public Information Officer
Office of Emergency Management
Hourly Pay Range: $38.11 - $57.17
Closing Date: June 28, 2026 or sooner upon receipt of the first 50 application submissions
Job Summary: The Public Information Officer supports the development, dissemination, and tracking of internal and external communications for the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). This role ensures clear, accurate, and engaging communication across multiple platforms, including patient care guidelines, social media, annual reports, surveys, and multilingual materials. The incumbent works closely with leadership and subject matter experts.
Job Responsibilities:
Develops and disseminates timely, accurate, and clear information to the public during emergencies and/or large-scale incidents. Coordinates consistent messaging through press releases, media briefings, and social media.
Ensures public facing resources (OEM Website, Social Media, Annual Reports, etc.) are up to date, accurate and consistent across multiple communication methods including multiple languages. Maintains accurate list of key contacts for message dissemination.
Primary developer on applications for grants, awards, reports and media releases. Seeks subject matter expertise and input prior to release. Coordinates all releases with key partners in the County.
Serves as the primary liaison between the OEM and the media. Responds to media inquiries, arranges interviews, and ensures that spokespersons are prepared with key messages.
Promotes preparedness campaigns and educates the public on emergency procedures, evacuation plans, and safety tips. Organizes outreach events, workshops, and public forums to build community resilience
Minimum Qualifications:
Current residency within the State of Wisconsin upon application required
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Policy or Public Relations or related.
At least one year of experience working in Communications, Public Relations or related field
Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications including Visio and Adobe Pro
Push/Pull and Lift/Carry up to 50LBS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to be assertive without being overly forceful and be able to keep calm under pressure. Ability to exchange basic information with internal and/or external contacts, maintain sensitive or confidential information, explain and gather information, answer queries, or provide assistance to internal and/or external contacts, perform with a high degree of authority in securing understanding and cooperation with internal and/or external contacts, read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence and memos;
