Trainee Engineer

Job Description

The Role

SUSE is looking for the next generation of open source engineers. As an engineering trainee, you will be working alongside experienced software engineers, learning from the best in the business.

The Software Engineer Trainee role is incredibly diverse. Depending on your interests and our current projects, you can gain exposure to AI Engineering, Core Platforms & Kernel, Software Packaging, QA & Automation, Cloud, Containers, Security, Telco, and many more. You will learn how to maintain and develop software that runs some of the world’s most critical systems.

The position is a 12-month contract. We offer a very flexible approach to your growth: you can either rotate through different teams (roughly every 3 months) to learn a bit of everything, or stay within one team to deepen your specific knowledge. It is very open and depends on our mutual agreement.

Start date: 01 July 2026

SUSE wants you to succeed academically, as well as professionally. We are very flexible regarding your working hours - we offer part-time or full-time contracts, and we are open to any arrangement that fits your schedule and school requirements.

This position is one pathway to a full-time engineering position with SUSE, but does not guarantee a position within SUSE following the Engineering Trainee Program.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Linux & Operating Systems: This is a key prerequisite. We expect you to have some background knowledge of Linux and how the operating systems work.

  • Languages: We use many languages (C, C++, Go, Ruby, Python, Perl). Shell scripting in Bash will certainly be useful. We don’t expect you to know all of them, but you should be comfortable with at least one.

  • Git: Crucial to how we work. Some experience with Git is important for collaboration; if you have the basics, we will teach you the rest.

  • Open Source: Contributions to open-source projects are a massive plus. If you have a portfolio or a personal project you are proud of, please share it!

  • English: You should be able to work primarily in English (roughly B2-C1 level) as you will be collaborating with colleagues worldwide.

Personal Attributes

  • You should be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s program, or a PhD program. However, we are open to making exceptions. If you are unsure, please apply anyway!

  • You should love learning new things. It seems obvious, but one of the joys of our jobs is quickly exploring complex systems we are unfamiliar with. Curiosity and an inquisitive mind are something we all share at SUSE.

What we can offer

  • A standard employment contract. You will be working as a valued member of our team.

  • A great opportunity to find what you enjoy doing! By trying your hand in various Software Engineering roles, you will find your hidden superpowers and do something you are great at.

  • Valuable industry experience. Even if things don’t work out, you will have real Software Engineering experience that you can point to.

  • Open source is in our DNA. Your contributions will build on some of the greatest open source projects out there. You can point to your public contributions and say: hello world, I did that!
