A chair car-wheelchair van driver, also known as a chair car driver, provides safe and efficient non-emergency transportation for disabled, handicapped, or elderly persons to and from their destinations including medical appointments, procedures, and healthcare facilities. Wheelchair van and bus drivers will aid patients as they enter and exit the vehicle, secure wheelchairs, and ensure safety at all times. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients to and from medical appointments, procedures, and healthcare facilities.
  • Assist patients with entering and exiting the vehicle, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the journey.
  • Properly secure wheelchairs for transportation
  • Maintain a clean and well-equipped vehicle, adhering to all safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers, healthcare professionals, and patients to coordinate pick-up and drop-off times and locations.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and respect for patients and their families.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and regulations, prioritizing the safety of patients and other road users at all times.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing schedules and patient needs.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and promptly, including trip logs, mileage records, and incident reports.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.

  • Part Time Employees work a minimum of 16 hours a week
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with all company policies, procedures, and guidelines at all times.

  • Completes other duties as requested and assigned

 Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

  • Current valid MA driver’s license 
  • CPR Certification (will provide training and certification if needed)

Experience:

  • 1+ years of driving experience required
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Analytical skills to gather and interpret data in situations in which the information or problems are relatively routine.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment while working in a stressful environment
  • Previous driving experience in a commercial setting a plus
  • Commitment to providing exemplary customer service

Requirements:

  • Must be 19 years of age or older
  • Pre-hire Lift test and physical must be passed to demonstrate the ability to meet the essential duties and physical, mental and sensory requirements of the position at all times. 
  • Pre-Hire drug screen and Comply with UDS drug screening at any and all times
  • Satisfactory background check and MA CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), verification required annually.
  • Verification of an acceptable motor vehicle driving record, verification required annually.

 Physical Requirements 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met and maintained by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The position requires significant physical strength, dexterity and the ability to function in very adverse environments. 

This job requires:

  • Ability to lift and maneuver 125+ pounds with assistance and without difficulty
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs repeatedly and the ability to lift and carry 125+ pounds up and down stairs
  • Ability to maneuver patient loaded wheelchair up and down three stairs without difficulty.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk without difficulty and without affecting the immediate performance of job-related duties.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and crawl as necessary
  • Ability to occasionally work in low light and confined spaces
  • Ability to work within a mobile environment.
