The Clinical Pharmacist – Inpatient, PRN supports pharmacy operations at Akron General, providing clinical and operational pharmacy services across a variety of inpatient care settings. Based in the inpatient pharmacy on the hospital’s first floor, this role rotates through multiple responsibilities including patient chart review, medication order verification, pharmacotherapy evaluation, and support of daily pharmacy operations. Caregivers collaborate closely with pharmacists, technicians, and interdisciplinary care teams to triage patient care needs, optimize medication therapy, and ensure safe and efficient medication-use processes. Responsibilities also include performing sterile and non-sterile compounding checks, supporting pharmacist and technician workflows, and providing pharmacy support for infusion center operations across Akron Main, Stow, Bath, and Green. This position offers broad exposure to both inpatient and ambulatory infusion pharmacy services within a collaborative, patient-focused environment.

This is a PRN role. A caregiver in this position will work variable shifts but primarily 2nd shift and weekends (2 or more per month). Shifts vary from 7:00am to 3:30pm, or 11:00am to 7:30pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide safe, efficient, patient-centered, evidence-based medication services. 
  • Verify medication orders and/or dispense medications accurately according to state and federal regulations. 
  • Document services in a complete, accurate and timely manner. 
  • Ensure all pharmacy operations comply with national accreditation standards. 
  • Maintain professional interactions with patients to facilitate successful patient experiences. 
  • Educate and train students, residents, other caregivers, and/or patients.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • PharmD or Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy. 
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) or eligible for reciprocation in current state within 90 days of hire. 
  • For individuals required to administer immunizations, current Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross certification and completion of a Board of Pharmacy approved course in the administration of immunizations or certification obtained within 90 days of hire are required.  
    For individuals required to respond to adult or pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest events, current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification through American Heart Association (AHA), or certification obtained within one (1) year of hire, is required. 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Board certification. 
  • Completion of a post-graduate year 1 residency (PGY1), fellowship or 2 years of relevant post-graduate pharmacy experience. 
  • Post-graduate year 2 residency (PGY2) or relevant experience for Clinical Pharmacists hired in a specialized pharmacy practice area
  • Prior inpatient experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing and walking for prolonged times, approximately 75% of shift and continuously for extended periods of time. 
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer and dispensing functions of the job; ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Position often includes reaching, stretching, stooping, climbing steps and sitting.
  • Must have normal or corrected vision.
  • Must have ability to clearly communicate verbally by phone or in person

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
