Job Description
Crestron Electronics is looking for a Prototype R&D Shop Manager who will manage the fabrication of prototype parts and assemblies in a model shop environment. The Prototype Shop works primarily with metal and plastic materials to produce prototypes and assemblies for the Engineering Services Department and other company needs. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled hands-on manager to join our growing organization.
In this role the selected candidate will train, oversee and execute the programming, setting up, and operation of various shop equipment to produce precision parts in short-run quantities.
Responsibilities
Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of three (3) or more shop personnel, providing day-to-day leadership, technical guidance, performance feedback, and on-the-job training to ensure high-quality output.
Plan, prioritize, and schedule shop activities to support prototype part fabrication and assembly projects, ensuring deadlines, quality standards, and engineering requirements are consistently met.
Perform sheet metal fabrication, including forming, bending, and hardware insertion, in alignment with engineering drawings and prototype specifications.
Set up, operate, and maintain shop and prototype fabrication equipment, including:
CNC
Waterjet
Press brake
Lathe
Power saws
Plastic prototype: SLA, FDM and Polyjet
Graphics printer
Other manual & power equipment
Execute finishing and painting operations for prototype components, ensuring surface quality, cosmetic standards, and functional requirements are achieved.
Perform routine preventive maintenance, inspections, and basic troubleshooting on equipment per departmental procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient shop environment by enforcing safety policies, conducting safety training, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
Collaborate with engineering, design, and project teams to support rapid prototyping, continuous improvement, and timely problem resolution.
Maintain accurate documentation related to equipment usage, maintenance activities, safety training, and shop procedures.
Qualifications
Minimum of 10 years’ experience of which 2 or more were in a supervisory role
College, technical school, or 5 years of related professional experience
Ability to learn new technical and computer skills
Ability to learn new shop equipment and techniques.
Qualifications below are a must:
Ability to program in a CAD system to run shop equipment
Sheet metal forming experience
Proficient with all equipment listed above
Painting skills
CAD experience: Pro Engineer (Creo) or Solidworks.
Ability to lead and handle personnel in a positive professional way
Logical and Creative problem-solving skills
Detail oriented, working to tight tolerances
Able to work in a fast-paced environment
Be able to lift 40lbs.
HVLP/Air Brush Painting skills
Basic soldering skills and/or simple understanding of wiring
Basic Wood Working (table saw, chop saw)
