The Geoeconomic Threat Intelligence (GTI) team sits at the intersection of global business activity and national security. We track, structure, and analyse foreign investment, commercial expansion, and economic statecraft — turning raw business data into actionable defence intelligence. Our work feeds directly into Janes' DaaS platform, used by customers across government and industry worldwide.
Job Purpose
We are looking for an Associate Analyst to join the GTI team in our Arlington office. In this role, you will research, verify, and analyse Chinese and Russian commercial activity globally — including investments, infrastructure projects, joint ventures, and corporate ownership structures. Your work will directly contribute to structured datasets and analytical products consumed by defence and intelligence customers.
This is a data-driven analytical role. You will spend your time identifying and verifying transactions, maintaining database records to rigorous quality standards, and producing written assessments that contextualise geoeconomic trends and risks.
How you will contribute at Janes:
- Research and verify Chinese and Russian business activity across sectors including infrastructure, energy, logistics, and technology
- Enter and maintain structured data records in Janes' intelligence database, ensuring accuracy and consistency
- Write concise analytical assessments contextualising geoeconomic trends for defence and government audiences
- Apply quality control standards to ensure data integrity across the GTI dataset
- Meet daily production targets while maintaining high analytical standards
- Collaborate with senior analysts to develop thematic and regional analytical products
The ideal skills and experience for this role are
- Bachelor's or master's degree in economics, finance, international relations, regional studies, or a related field
- Strong analytical writing skills — ability to translate complex business and political data into clear, structured assessments
- Experience with data management, research databases, or structured research workflows
- Keen attention to detail and commitment to data quality
- Knowledge of Chinese and/or Russian foreign economic policy, investment patterns, or business practices
- Understanding of international political economy, corporate finance, or trade
- Ability to work to daily deadlines in a production-oriented environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
Other preferred skills and experience
- Mandarin or Russian language skills
- Familiarity with corporate registry tools, business intelligence platforms, or financial data sources
- Experience working with structured datasets or contributing to a data product

Salary Range:
Base salary range: $70,000 – $75,000 per year
Compensation at Janes is determined by factors such as job responsibilities, education, certifications, experience, skills, internal and external equity, clearance level (if applicable), market data, organizational requirements, applicable employment laws, and location. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus or monthly commission, subject to the terms of these plans.
