Phlebotomist Representative I - Hospital - Royal Oak, MI, On-Call
Represents the face of our company to patients within the hospital systems at Quest Diagnostics, both as part of their routine health management or for insights into life-defining health decisions. The Phlebotomist I draws quality blood samples from patients while following established practices and procedures. The Phlebotomist I has direct contact with patients and creates an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures to patients and drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and accurate manner. The Phlebotomist I will demonstrate Quest Leadership Behaviors while focusing on process excellence skills and sensitivity to confidentiality and accuracy to patient information. Successful applicants will be assigned to work in a fast-paced hospital environment.

- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all age groups.
- Accurately label and process specimens according to laboratory protocol.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy carts and work areas.
- Administer oral solutions according to established training, such as Glucola.
- Data entry and processing specimens including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.
- Perform departmental-related clerical duties when assigned such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, and answer phones when needed.
- Read, understand and comply with departmental policies, protocols and procedures: (i.e. Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual, Employee Handbook, Quality Assurance Manual); and ensure that all staff members follow instructions.
- Observe infection control and safety protocols at all times.
- Maintain all appropriate phlebotomy logs in a timely manner and based on frequency, such as maintenance logs and temperature logs.
- Responsible for completing all data entry requirements, where applicable, accurately including data entry of patient registration; entry of test order from requisition or pulling order from database; managing Standing Orders.
- Ensure facilities are neat, clean and in good repair, takes appropriate action to advise Group Leader or Supervisor of required repairs and maintenance.
- Complete training courses and keep up to date with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
- Communicate effectively with patients, nursing staff, and lab personnel.
- Participate in special projects and teams.
- Rotate through inpatient, outpatient, physicians’ offices, and ED settings as scheduled.
- Assist with training new staff or students as needed.
- Stay up to date on company communications.
- Performs additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
Required Work Experience:
- Demonstrate proficient phlebotomy skills to include pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections.
- Flexible and available based on staffing needs, which includes weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime.
- Must have reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and clean driving record, if applicable.
Preferred Work Experience:
- One year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Customer service and healthcare experience preferred.
- Keyboard/data entry experience.
- Depending on site operations and model, Hospital Phlebotomists may also support pre-analytical laboratory functions
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Lift light to moderately heavy objects. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects. Objects in the weight range of 1 to 15 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects in the weight range of 16 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried. Objects exceeding 41 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
- Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time; requires long hours of eye-hand coordination.
- Must be able to use stairs and/or elevators to move between floors as required by the job.
- Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand frequently to constantly throughout the day.
- Position may require travel.
- Extensive use of phone and PC.
- Fine dexterity with hands/steadiness.
- Positional Coordination (balancing, bending/kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching/twisting).

- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

- Excellent phlebotomy skills to include pediatric and geriatric.

Education:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent. (Required)
Preferred Technical Training or Professional Licensing:
- Phlebotomy certification (required in certain states, e.g. California, Nevada, Washington and Louisiana) (Preferred)
