Cell Biologist
Job Description
• Laboratory and related work (80-90% of time) under daily to weekly supervision
• Work with supervisor to define aim of experiments and a plan to achieve that aim in a given time frame, will then execute work following the plan (independently, if familiar with area of work, with guidance if unfamiliar)
• Will carry out on-going analysis of data generated and will identify problems
• Will implement necessary changes following discussion with peers/ supervisor
• Will analyze and interpret experimental data, results and methodology used with appropriate guidance
• Will gain skills and experience to be fully conversant with the operation and validation of all items of equipment or IT needed for experimentation, data analysis, storage and data entry
• Write up laboratory notebooks regularly in compliance with GSP and internal policies. Preparation of presentation materials. Contribute to writing of e.g. SOPs, study reports and protocols
• Regular communication with supervisor and team members (1:1 and group meetings)
• Communication/presentation at internal meetings
• Work safely themselves, completion of risk assessments, compliance with PGRD procedures, will recognize risks (own and others), within own area of expertise. Intervene or take action, where appropriate.
• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in life sciences, preferably in cell biology/ virology/ immunology
• With at least 1 year working in a laboratory in either an academic or (preferably) industrial setting
• Maintenance of mammalian cell lines in culture (both adherent and suspension culture)
• Plate-based cellular assays relevant to immunology and/ or virology
• Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred– 96-/ 384-well plate based assays, virus infectivity and/ or neutralization assays, qRT-PCR to measure total virus load, ELISA-based techniques to measure antibody responses, transient transfection of mammalian cells
