Position Summary

This position supports the academic, social, and personal success of students from diverse backgrounds through mentorship, guidance, and encouragement. They serve as positive role models while helping participants navigate college life, connect with campus and TRIO resources, and build confidence and belonging at San Juan College. Peer Mentors also assist with TRIO workshops, outreach, events, and activities that promote student engagement, retention, and success.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Develop and maintain supportive, professional mentoring relationships with assigned TRIO participants to support academic success, retention, and engagement.
  • Provide peer mentoring, encouragement, and academic support while assisting students in navigating college systems and connecting with campus and community resources.
  • Conduct active outreach and recruitment of eligible students through classroom presentations, campus engagement, and TRIO outreach activities.
  • Represent TRIO SSS & STEM-H at campus events and activities to promote services and increase student participation.
  • Plan and support TRIO student engagement activities, including social, academic, and enrichment events.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with assigned students and support outreach to both active and inactive participants.
  • Support TRIO Center operations, including general administrative assistance and program event support.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student contacts, outreach, and required program reporting, including participation tracking and Time & Effort reporting.
  • Ensure proper participation procedures are followed, including student sign-ins and completion of required feedback forms.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions, and collaborate effectively with TRIO staff and campus partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and uphold program policies and professional standards at all times.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Familiarity with campus resources (tutoring center, financial aid, advising, student support services, etc.).
  • Awareness of TRIO’s mission and goals, especially supporting first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students.
  • Basic study skills and time management strategies that can be shared with peers.
  • Understanding of student life at San Juan College (navigating Canvas, registration, library, student activities, etc.).
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and professionalism, with the ability to maintain students’ privacy and appropriate boundaries in accordance with FERPA and program requirements.
  • Basic communication skills — how to listen actively, ask questions, and connect students with the right resources.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, responsibility, reliability, and commitment to student success

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Director of the TRIO SSS STEM H Program assigns work in terms of general instructions providing some guidance. Some tasks may require judgement and decision making. The supervisor spot checks in progress and completed work to ensure it follows established procedures and guidelines and meets program expectations.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Center Policies, San Juan College policies, FERPA guidelines ADA regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require judgement, and selection in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of mentoring and student support duties that involve guiding, listening and connecting students to resources. The diversity in student population and the variety of student needs adds complexity to the work performed.   
  • The purpose of this position is to engage with a diverse group of peers by providing academic and personal support, encouragement and guidance to students from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Contacts are typically to share or exchange information, provide encouragement, connect students to resources and the support their academic and personal success.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching.  The employee occasionally lifts light objects. 
  • The work is typically performed in an office setting or student support setting.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Current enrollment at San Juan College in good academic standing
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations from various cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds
  • Basic knowledge of college systems with willingness to learn platforms such as Canvas, student email, and institutional tools
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a student support environment.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to balance multiple responsibilities, including mentoring, outreach, and event support
  • Willingness to participate in required trainings, meetings, campus events, and occasional evening or weekend activities
